Minnesota State Fair
Thousands of out-of-towners flock to St Paul that is noted for hosting fun events and activities. One such activity that draws millions of people to the region is Minnesota State Fair.
It is one of the top largest fairs in the Unite States and is held adjacent to the St Paul campus in Falcon Heights. Touted as "The Great Minnesota Get Together", the Minnesota State Fair lasts for 12 days at the end of August through Labor Day.
The Fair features exhibit halls, entertainment venues, outdoor displays of farming machinery, livestock, horses, a midway with rides and carnival-type attractions, media, politicians, and, most of all, fair food.
The major state get-together, Minnesota State Fair hosts almost 1.7 million visitors annually from around the Midwest. Its history dates back to 1859, when the first Minnesota State Fair was held near what became downtown Minneapolis.
During the fair"s early years, the site of the exposition changed annually, but in the 1870s and early 1880s, some civic groups worked relentlessly to provide a permanent home for the fair.
The Minnesota State Fair finally found a permanent home at its present location when the Ramsey County Board of Commissioners donated 210-acres to the governing body of the State Fair.
Architecturally, the Minnesota State Fair is home for many historically-significant structures such as the Arts Center, Progress Center, Grandstand and Coliseum. It has now grown to 320 acres.
The State Fair features a spectacular array of attractions to fair visitors. While agriculture is the primary focus, the scope of activities has broadened. Today, the Fair also hosts large-scale entertainment acts, technological and industrial exhibits and scores of education and government institutions.
A large portion of the Minnesota State Fairgrounds is occupied by livestock barns, displaying various farm animals. Several livestock shows are held where animals and their owners take part to compete for awards.
Another primary attraction at the State Fair is the wide variety of food to be had. Food at the Fair reflects Minnesota"s agriculture; cheese curds, milk shakes, corn dogs, and FootLong Hot Dogs are popular favorites.
While, many food vendors come up with tempting cuisine, making visitors fall in love with it. You will see people smoking food "On a Stick".
The Minnesota State Fair also plays host to such shows as concerts, comedy shows, product demonstrations, and the State Fair Talent Contest just to mention a few.
As of 2008 estimates, the total attendance was 1,693,533. If you"re planning to visit or are fortunate enough to be in Minnesota in August, don"t miss your chance to experience the ultimate in fun and excitement.
