Metro Station
Metro Station is a powerpop band for teens and young adults. It has formed in Los Angeles, California. They signed to Columbia/Red Ink Records and are perhaps best known for their top-ten hit ‘Shake It’.
The band consists of four members, Mason Musso (vocals, guitar), Trace Cyrus (guitar, vocals), Blake Healy (keyboards, synthesizer), and Anthony Improgo (percussion).
Metro Station was started by Musso and Cyrus in 2006. Since Musso’s brother, Mitchel, and Cyrus’s sister, Miley, are on Hannah Montana, their mothers introduced them to each other on the set of Hannah Montana.
Sharing musical interests, they decided to form a band. Shortly thereafter, Cyrus recruited Blake Healy from Synthetic Joy as a keyboardist, synthesist, and bassist. Trace remained the singer and the lead guitarist.
Mason is the main singer and guitarist, along with Trace. He sang the track ‘Seventeen Forever’, which they released on their MySpace Music website. The track gained the attention of percussionist Anthony Improgo, who was soon added as the band’s drummer.
Their popularity on MySpace Music grew, topping the MySpace Music Unsigned Band’s charts. An intern in Columbia Records’ Walking Eye program discovered the band while looking through the MySpace Music charts, and they were signed shortly thereafter.
In the July 2007 issue of music magazine Alternative Press, Metro Station was listed as one of the ‘22 Best Underground Bands’. Metro Station released their self-titled debut studio album in September, the album had two singles released, ‘Kelsey’ and ‘Control’ both failed to chart, although with higher sales of the album both became more popular.
It wasn’t until mid-2008 when the release of the single ‘Shake It’ grabbed the band a significant amount of commercial exposure, peaking in the top-ten of three US charts.
The song has peaked at #3 on Hot Digital Songs, #9 in the Pop 100, #10 in the Billboard Hot 100 and also at #20 in the Hot Dance Airplay chart. The success of the song also affected album sales, the album charting nine months later in 2008 at #43 in the Billboard 200, #1 Top Electronic Albums and #2 in the Top Heatseekers.
The band has toured with numerous bands such as We The Kings, Boys Like Girls, Valencia, Cobra Starship and Good Charlotte. This summer they are touring with Boys Like Girls, Good Charlotte and The Maine for the Soundtrack of Your Summer Tour 2008.
Metro Station’s Disco Balls & Blow Up Dolls tour will showcase sets from stellar support acts including the alternative hip-hop duo Shwayze, pop rapper Tyga, and emergent New Jersey popsters Cash Cash.
Currently winding up a series of shows as one of the featured attractions on the Soundtrack Of Your Summer Tour 2008 with Columbia Records labelmates Boys Like Girls and Good Charlotte, Metro Station will preface its North American headline tour with a string of Canadian dates running through September 13 as support act for Simple Plan.
Among the band’s upcoming television appearances, Metro Station has been confirmed to appear on ABC’s ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live!’ on September 4. Metro Station made its national television debut on Wednesday, August 13, performing the group’s current Top 10 single, ‘Shake It’, on ‘Good Morning America’.
‘Shake It’, the latest single from the band’s debut album ‘Metro Station’, has been awarded RIAA Gold and Platinum certifications while becoming the first Metro Station record to break into the Top 10 of the U.S. Hot 100 chart.
‘Shake It’, which has sold more than 1.2 million copies in the U.S. to-date, rocketed into Billboard’s Pop 100 (#7), Pop 100 Airplay (#5), Hot Digital Songs (#3), and Top 40 Mainstream (#11) charts.
The ‘Shake It’ video, which has been viewed more than 9 million times on YouTube, is in rotation at The N, FUSE and MTV’s TRL, where it has achieved Top 10 status. ‘Shake It’, which may be heard in TV spots for the ‘What Happens In Vegas ... ‘ campaign, was chosen as the official theme song for the 2008 Teen Choice Awards, which aired on August 4 on FOX.
In addition to the band’s more than 15.2 million plays and nearly 17 million profile views on its MySpace page, Metro Station may be heard on more than 100 American Pop radio stations coast-to-coast.
Metro Station is currently enjoying the success of the band’s self-titled debut album, which has achieved Top 40 status on the Billboard 200 best-selling albums chart while reaching #1 on the Billboard Top Electronic Albums chart and #2 on the Billboard Heatseekers chart for emerging new bands.

They will be touring this year as the opening act for such bands as Cobra Starship and We The Kings, on the ‘Really Really Ridiculously Good Looking Tour’. They are currently touring Europe with ‘Panic! At the Disco’.
