When the whole world is doing shallow music that sells Medeski Martin & Wood is one of the few bands that are actually working for the love of music. This is a Soul Jazz band striving to create a perfect harmony of avant-garde musical compositions and classical yet groovy Jazz. This American band has earned their distinct place in the music industry due to their dedication and commitment to produce quality music. The band started off their journey in 1991 at the Brooklyn city of New York. The band unlike others did not seek a fast and easy claim to success but stayed true to the art of music.
The Medeski Martin & Wood is a jazz trio with John Medeski as the major keyboardist and pianist. The Billy Martin in the band is responsible for drums and percussions while Chris wood is their bassist. The John Medeski of the band is a veteran keyboard player born and raised in Florida. He has a groove based funk and jazz music style. He is also a notable composer and has been respected for his experimental music that is the soul and spirit of their band.
This band has a perfect story of a friendship trio conjoined together for something they love. The same love and compassion reflects intently in each composition of theirs. Their story together began when Medeski and Wood met each other in the Boston's prestigious music school The New England Conservatory of Music. Both of them immediately hit it off due to their common passion of music. Chris Wood at that time was determined to hit upon the right dais to channel his creative impasse while living in the Brooklyn's neighborhood D.U.M.B.O (Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass). Their urge of doing something extraordinary prompted them to explore the more contemporary underworld jazz scene of the burgeoning city of New York.
This trio was aiming to create songs that are not just the reflection of their individual personalities but also gave a glimpse of their magic as a conjoined musical group. They experimented with the hip hop beats and tried synchronizing it with jazz rhythms. The most prevalent quality of their music is the simplicity and propulsion by improvising diverse yonder. The harmonizing of different textures and sounds brimmed with pure intensity. This band does not like bounding themselves in any defined perimeters they believe in following their gut instinct and are excited to see the wonders it can create.
This merger of theirs led to new beginnings gigs became full fledge concerts, performance venue from small clubs became big stadiums and in no time they were travelling all over US. Their next move was naturally their debut album "Notes from the Underground."The Album was their independent release by the hap-jones records. The album featured songs like "Hermeto's Daydream" ,"The Saint","La Garonne""Orbits", "Uncle Chubb", "Rebirth", "Otis", "United" ,"Caravan" and "Querencia". The album made use of strong sounds of trumpet, tuba, trombone, alto saxophone, alto flute and bass clarinet.
In the small time of a year the Medeski and Wood has established themselves as promising musicians who are here to stay. Their second album was "it's a Jungle in Here" released in October 1993 which was followed by a couple of other albums. The other studio albums of this band includes Friday Afternoon in the Universe (1995) ,Shack-man (1996) ,Farmer's Reserve (1997) , Combustication (1998) Tonic (2000) , The Dropper (2000),Electric Tonic (2001) , Uninvisible (April 9, 2002) ,End of the World Party (Just in Case) (2004),Let's Go Everywhere (2008) , Zaebos: Book of Angels Vol.11 (2008) and The Radiolarian Series. The Radiolarian Series was a three album project released in subsequent intervals. The name of the series is well thought out as it is derived from the biological phenomenon of developing intricate mineral skeletons layer by layer. The album has a distinct spot in the studio album as it was recorded in a reversal process. Their song "End of the world party" made quite an impression when featured in the famous TV show Grey's Anatomy. This song is also included in the album of the show as one of the sound tracks.
Medeski Martin & Wood are also known for their live performance as they bring an element of exploration in each show. Their concerts normally feature extended improvisations both arrhythmic and atonal that add value to the whole live music experience. In their tours they also bring back the pure acoustic performances that they were known for in the beginning. To experience their live music extravaganza Get the Medeski Martin tickets now!
