The music world needs no introduction to who Mary Chapin Carpenter is. The artist is not only a singer but she is also an exceptional musician and songwriter. Choosing folk and country music as her genres she has made the music world proud with her prowess in her field. The artist has had her fair share of problems and difficulties both in her personal and professional life, but she has managed to overcome all of these and has remained focused on coming out of these perils stronger than before. She managed to defeat all the issues that plagued her and all the while producing music that continued to amaze her fans. She went through a divorce, lost her father and experienced a serious illness, all in a short span of few years. However, she was not deterred by these tragedies and overcame all her troubles.
The artist was always encouraged by her father to pursue her interest in music. Mary Chapin Carpenter started writing her own music when she was only a young child and when her parents discovered her inclination towards music, they allowed her to learn as many instruments as she wanted. The first instrument she played was her mother’s bass ukulele and from there she moved on to a gut string guitar. From then on, Mary Chapin Carpenter never laid down her instruments and continued her struggles to get bigger and better in her chosen field. She attended Brown University for her college degree, but continued with playing and writing music all through her time at college.
Despite the fact that Mary Chapin Carpenter played for small local parties and clubs wherever she lived, she never had the courage to play her songs. It was not until she moved to Washington DC and started playing at the local clubs there that she became confident enough to play some of her original compositions. To say that the response was warm from the crowd would be an understatement. The audience at these clubs loved her songs and urged for an encore every time. It was at one of these events that Mary Chapin Carpenter was picked up by Columbia Records and since then she has been climbing the ladder for success pretty quickly.
Mary Chapin Carpenter has won five prestigious Grammy Awards in the course of her career. The latest one having won in 1995 for “Best Country Vocal Performance, Female” for the song “Shut Up and Kiss Me”. The Academy of Country Music also honored her with two awards in the early 1990’s. In 2012, Mary Chapin Carpenter’s name was included in the Nashville Songwriter’s Hall of Fame. These were only some of the honors and awards she has earned, there are many more that are listed under her accomplishments.
Mary Chapin Carpenter has released more than ten albums during the time that she has spent in the music industry. Her latest album came out in 2012 and was titled “Ashes and Roses”. The album was basically a confessional of the singer and showed off the true emotions that she had kept hidden throughout her troubled times. However, she kept her grace and poise throughout this confessional album and only expressed her emotions and feelings with her music. Heartbreak, loneliness, grief, acceptance, gratitude and yearning all can be detected in her songs. This album clearly showed off the maturity that Mary Chapin Carpenter had achieved due to the pain and grief that she went through in the last few years.
