Born as Marisa de Azevedo Monte on July 1, 1967 in Rio de Janeiro, Marisa Monte is a renowned Brazilian singer and songwriter, who is classically trained in opera singing.
She made her entry to the music industry in 1980s and after failing to make her mark in music industry she lost hope; she moved to Italy and went in semi exile. During her stay in Italy she met Nelson Motta, a popular producer, who later became her boyfriend as well.
After that she became a mixture of Pop Rock artist and a MPB Diva. She mostly worked in collaboration with songwriters and musicians like Nando Reis, Carlinhos Brown and Arnaldo Antunes, and also with the producer Arto Lindsay.
Foreign artists with whom she has worked include Julieta Venegas, Laurie Anderson, David Byrne, and Ryuichi Sakamoto. A Brazilian Musical trio Tribalistas, comprising of Marisa Monte, Arnaldo Antunes, and Carlinhos Brown, released an album titled Tribalistas in 2002.
The album was comprised of 13 tracks and it was released in later 2002 by EMI in Brazil, while in early 2003 in all over the world. The album peaked at #1 spot on the Brazilian Music Charts and sold well over a million units in Brazil only.
Although with having such a major success with their album, the trio never performed any song from the album on TV, nor did they give any interviews on both TV and Radio.
The albums success was not contained in Brazil only; it also was a major success in Europe as well. The album received triple platinum status in Italy, and in Spain it received Double Platinum status. In Portugal the album was cited, the Best Selling Album of the Year.
Tribalistas also did considerably well on the music charts in Sweden, Switzerland, Germany, France, Netherlands and several other countries. The albums success became self evident when in 2003 it received 5 Latin Grammy Music Award nominations and won Best Brazilian Contemporary Pop Album award.
Some of the hits from the album Tribalistas included J? Sei Namorar, Passe em Casa, and Velha Inf?ncia. The former one peaked at #1 spot on Hot 100 Brazil Charts and was also seen on Music Charts in several European countries as well.
Another song from the same album, Mary Cristo received considerable popularity as it was heavily played on radio during Christmas in 2003. Later, following the success of the album, a DVD was also released that featured the making of the album.
The Cover of the album depicting all three members of the group was designed by a Brazilian Artist Vik Muniz in his signature style.
Marisa Monte released her self titled debut album in 1989, which received 2x Platinum Status after selling more than 500,000 units. It was then followed by another one of her Platinum albums, Mais that was released in 1991.
Her most recent album Infinito Particular came out in 2006, and received 2x Platinum Status after selling more than 300,000 copies. Also in the same year, she released another one of her albums titled Universo ao Meu Redor.
