Hailing from California, Lukas Nelson is the son of the legendary country pop artist Willie Nelson. In 2007 Lukas Nelson moved from Hawaii to Los Angeles and enrolled into the Loyola Marymount University, but fate had other plans for this talented star. In 2008, while attending his favorite Neil Young concert, Lukas bumped into drummer Anthony LoGerfo who happened to share his passion for music. Shortly afterwards, the two started playing together in Seal Beach. Later that year Lukas left college to pursue music as his life long career with musicians like Anthony LoGerfo for drums, Merlyn Kelly as a bassist and Tato Melgar as the percussionist. The unison culminated in the birth of POTR and the band played its initial shows in the fall of 2008.
Their first EP “Live Beginnings” released in October 2008 having live tracks was recorded off the soundboard in Solana Beach at the famous “Belly Up” and provided funds for the band's live tours. During this time the band also assisted Willie Nelson on his nine-show tour which included a stop at The Fillmore, San Francisco for five nights. Later the band performed at Colorado and Nebraska with the famous B.B. King and ultimately managed to sell out all its stock of the “Live Beginnings” records.
POTR released its first studio recording titled “Brando's Paradise Sessions EP” in April 2009. Interestingly, the album's cover art and on-stage paints were designed by Lukas's brother Micah Nelson which became the basis for the band's signature logo i.e. the Peace Sign. The album is considered to be the band's breakthrough release and has sold 10,000 copies to date. The band experienced an early blow when bassist Merlyn Kelly departed to pursue new interests in the summer of 2009. The band experimented with friends John Avila from Oingo Boingo and JP Maramba for a year before finally settling down with Corey McCormick. A veteran, McCormick had already performed with numerous musicians like Chris Cornell of the famous Soundgarden.
POTR released its debut self-titled album “Promise of the Real” on 21st December 2010 which was recorded at the Pedernales Studios in Austin. Steve Chadie, the album engineer, used his 6 year old daughter's drawing feats as part of the album's cover art while the remaining was done by Micah Nelson, including a booklet of works he had collected live on stage with the band. The 13-track album was emblematic of the multi-genre capabilities of the band and boasted of an assortment of sound and technique. Singles like “Pali Gap”, “LA” and “Hey Baby” sought to pay tribute to Lukas's life-long inspirations namely Neil Young and Jimi Hendrix. The album was more of a family product as Willie Nelson and Lukas's sister Amy Niccore co-authored the cover of the song “Peaceful Solution”. Willie also gave back vocals in “Fathers and Mothers” and “Sound of Your Memory”, while aunt Bobbie Nelson played the piano for “Fathers and Mothers”.
In order to promote its debut feat, the band toured extensively all over America throughout 2011, playing 200 shows a year. Apart from its first national TV appearance on “The Tonight Show” and “Late Show with David Letterman”, the band was featured in popular festivals like “Sturgis Buffalo Chip Campground”, “Farm Aid” and “Bridge School Benefit”.
