Born in 1967 as Gerrit Heesemann in Hamburg, Lotto King Karl is a son of a bank clerk and a housewife. He finished high school at the Grammar School of JJohanneum . This was followed by several different jobs such as packers and courier drivers and military service in the Navy. In the year 1995, he released his debut single, which was titled I've hit the jackpot. The following year, his debut album White modest was issued. He formed a band called The Barmbek Dream Boys, which had Klaus Volland on the guitar, Frank Ramond on the chorus, guitar, and keyboard, Lukas Hilbert on the guitar and bass guitar, Frank Itt also on the bass guitar, Thorsten Heintzsch on the Keyboard, Jan Carstensen on the saxophone and clarinet and Lorenz Hoppe on the drums.
With this album and his presence in a local radio station, he gained fame internationally. One of his most popular song was a hymn to his native city, titled Hamburg meine Perle. On the 18th of February 2000, he took on "Countdown Grand Prix 2000," the German preliminary decision on the Euro Vision Song Contest, with the song Fly. He was awarded the 7th place in the contest.
The single No borders, no fences was released in the year 2004 as an advertising jingle. It is also the only single from which made it into the charts in Germany. In the year 2003 he acted in his first film role in the Andy Ommsen movie called sandwiches-Andi. Another guest-role he took over in 2004 was of a football coach in the youth film Love, oh, and how.
After the success of his albums and songs, he wrote many songs with his longtime friend Carsten Pape. He is often seen as a commentator and co-host or a guest of TV shows such as The 100 Most Annoying ... and in the Chart Show on RTL. He also hosted the show called 90 on RTL2. From 2003 until December 2011 he was a radio host at Radio Hamburg, where in 2005 he hosted 90. He is also an announcer for Hamburger SV.
In August of 2005, Lotto King Karl began his first Germany-wide tour under the title Born2Rock-Live2Die. In April 2008, another album was released by the name of Change Sides. This album was recorded with his band, the Barmbek Dream Boys. On 12 June 2009, the joint album by Lotto King Karl and Carsten Pape was released.
