Lauren Sevian is a Grammy Award winning musician, renowned for her skill with the saxophone. She has been performing as a professional musician since the age of twelve, when she began playing the piano. By the age of sixteen, the saxophonist was wowing audiences and won the Count Basie Invitational, leading to a concert with the renowned Basie Band. By the time Sevian was seventeen years old, she had performed at some of the most renowned venues in the US; Carnegie Hall, the Village Vanguard and Lincoln Center. Lauren Sevian studied music at the Manhattan School of Music in New York City. Here, she learned under the tutelage of Steve Slagie, Mark Turner, Joe Temperley, Donny McCaslin and Mike Abene. While still studying, she went on tour with the famous band, Diva, and then graduated from the school with a degree in music in 2001. In 2003, she became a member of the Mingus Big Band, with which she has performed all over the US and the world. She was also in the movie, Mona Lisa Smile, starring Julia Roberts. In 2006, she recorded music with Greg Osby for Breakfast in Bed, a Joan Osbourne album.
In 2007, she played music with the Mingus Epitaph Orchestra at various venues in the US. They mostly performed Charles Mingus's songs. Later that year, she became a member of the faculty of the Litchfield Jazz Camp. In 2008, Lauren Sevian was an adjudicator and performer at the Next Generation Festival, part of the Monterey Jazz Festival. At this mega event, she performed with the likes of Christian McBride, George Duke, Billy Harper, Terry-Lynn Carrington and Ron Westray. In 2009, she began touring with the Rescue Me Comedy Tour featuring Dennis Leary. Her appearances have been part of Douchebags & Donuts, a Comedy Central Special.
In 2009, Sevian was also invited to perform in Ireland at the Guinness Cork Jazz Festival with the Nikki Iles Quintet. She toured France that year as well, with Tamar-kali and the Black Rock Coalition Orchestra. In 2012, she performed with Jane Monheit and the Ladies of Jazz, as well as with Christian McBride's Big Band. For her achievements, she has received a Grammy Award, the SESAC Jazz Award and the Downbeat Critics Poll's Rising Star Award.
Sevian also has her own quartets; the Eb Quartet, made up of baritone, alto, drums and bass, as well as the LSQ, made up of baritone, piano, bass and drums. Many musicians have been part of Sevian's quartets, including George Colligan, Adam Burnbaum, Helen Sung, Boris Kozlov, Marcos Varela, Brad Jones, Johnathan Blake, E.J. Strickland, Jeff Davis, Curtis Torian and Mike DiRubbo.
The saxophonist has also been part of the Buffet Sax Trio alongside Russell Kirk and Jacob Yoffee. As a bandleader, she has performed at many of the best known jazz venues in the nation, including clubs like Smoke, Kitno, Mattatuck Museum, Jazz Gallery and Fat Cat.
With her LSQ quartet, she released the album Blueprint via Inner Circle Music. Blueprint spent many weeks atop the Jazzweek chart and was ranked as one of the best albums of the year. It received rave reviews from Amazon, DownBeat, Cadence Magazine and All About Jazz. It also led to many interviews with the likes of the Boston Globe, the Saxophone Journal, Jazz Inside, Hothouse, All About Jazz, George Colligan's Jazz Truth and even Japan's The Sax.
