Lake Street Dive came was formed when the guitarist from Minneapolis, Mike Olson handpicked the members. The other members of the band, Rachael Price is a vocalist from Tennessee, Bridget Kearney is a bassist from Iowa and Mike Calabrese is a drummer from Philadelphia. In 2006, Lake Street Dive recorded their debut CD titled "in this episode...". The recording was financed by the cash award that the band won in 2005. The song was written by Bridget Kearney and was entered into the 'John Lennon Songwriting Contest'. The quartet released another song with the title, "Promises, Promises". It was a live video that was filmed in 2010, at the Lizard Lounge. They released their music compositions with the title "Lake Street Dive" in 2011, when they signed up with 'Signature Sounds Recordings'.
Lake Street Dive performed more than 150 gigs in 2013. To perform these gigs, they travelled across eight countries, thirty-two states and fifty cities. Lake Street Dive gained a lot of popularity through a YouTube vide, which features the band gathered around a single microphone covering the song "I Want You Back" by the Jackson 5. The video was shot in a street corner of Brighton, Massachusetts to attract the attention of the general public. It has now crossed a viewership of one million.
The success of the band has been greatly influenced by multiple inspirations of its members. Most of the members have had training in classical music, while they were growing up. Few of them are inspired by the nineties music while the others take their inspiration from sixties' soul.
