The brilliant “Kid Congo Powers,” also known as Kid Congo is among the most versatile performers on the circuit today. He has done things his way to become one of the most recognizable faces in the world of music and entertainment. His talents have there for everyone to see and he has made sure he makes the most of them. He is now on tour and will soon be coming your way. Born as “Brian Tristan,” Kid Congo got hooked to music at a very early age. It didn’t take him too long to make his way to various concerts to listen to some of the biggest names in the industry. He then decided to turn to journalism when the time came to pick a career. Music was still a huge part of his life and that passion would keep on taking him to various gigs.
“The Ramones’” were a big part of the music scene when Tristan was young and he was a huge fan of theirs too. So a chance arrived for him to run the band’s fan club. It was like a dream come true and Powers grabbed it with both hands. He followed that up by running a fanzine dedicated to “The Screamers.” Those stints gave him invaluable insight into how the music world functioned.
Kid Congo himself never thought about taking music up as a profession. That is until the legendary “Jeffrey Lee Pierce” entered his life. That one event changed his life forever. Pierce was the one who saw the musician in him and encouraged Tristan to pick up a guitar and start performing. Together the two of them decided to form a group and that plan materialized in the shape of “The Gun Club.” Tristan became the lead guitarist and after getting a few new members on board they started to play small gigs. That led to opening slots at concerts by more famous names.
Kid Congo then left the group in the year 1980 and proceeded to join “The Cramps” when they decided to base themselves in Los Angeles. He remained on The Cramps roster for just under three years before taking his leave. The time he spent with the band gave him more exposure and that helped him a lot in subsequent years. In the meanwhile The Gun Club was undergoing numerous personnel changes too. Some members were leaving and new faces were being brought in so Kid Congo made his return to the line-up before the group hit the studio for their third album.
“The Las Vegas Story” came out in the year 1984 and Tristan’s guitar playing received a lot of praise from every corner. That was followed by a tour that took them to various parts of Europe. The Gun Club then took a bit of a break later that year before resuming in 1986. “Mother Juno,” their comeback album got a lot of rave reviews from critics.
Congo decided to leave the group in the year 1994. He then went on to perform as a solo performer and also worked on different collaborations with some other famous names. “Kid Congo and The Pink Monkey Birds” is among the latest of those associations that has gone one to receive a lot of praise across the board.
Kid Congo is considered by many to be the pioneer of the famous noise guitar. His exploits as an artist have propelled him to iconic stature among guitar enthusiasts. Even after staying at the top for so long, he is still going as strong as ever. He has hit the road once again so book your Kid Congo tickets and be a part of a fabulous concert live in person.
