She made her debut in 1972, at the Festival of Two Worlds in Spoleto, Italy. Her stage debut was in Rossini's play at Michigan Opera Theater in Detroit in 1975, and her first New York City Opera performance was in the very next year, in Mozart's Le nozze di Figaro. In the meantime Kathleen performed and sang at orchestral concerts in New York, Cleveland and Los Angeles. By 1976 she had made a name for herself and had performed in major opera houses.

During these performances, she caught attention of James Levine, who brought her to the Metropolitan Opera in New York in 1978, as the Shepherd in Wagner's play.
