Jonas started learning piano when he was eight years old. He also became a part of his elementary school choir. His father frequently took him to operas when he was young. This is a major factor which built his inclination towards a proper music career. Jonas got enrolled at Hochschule für Musik in Munich, for his Masters degree, where he studied from Joseph Mettemich, Hans Hotter and James King. But it was Hotter more than all others that truly inspired Jonas to turn towards opera and recitals.
Jonas Kaufmann started his professional career during his studies, with two small roles at two opera houses in Munich. In 1994, he became a part of the Saarlandisches Staatstheater Saarbrucken and mainly performed the lyric roles. He stayed with this ensemble for three years, but alongside he also kept performing at the leading opera houses around the world. In 2001, Jonas joined the Zurich Opera and gained name for his Mozart (Tamino, Idomeneo, Titus), Verdi (the Duke) and Gounod (Faust).
His major recordings and more widespread success kicked in by the turn of the century. Loewe's "The Three Wishes" in 2000, and Marschner's "Vampyr" in 2002, marked a milestone in Jonas Kaufmann's music career. In 2002, he also made his debut at Wigmore Hall in London, which was received warm heartedly by the audience and proved to be a great success. Similar response was received for his character "Alfredo" in La Traviata by Metropolitan Opera. In 2008 Decca CD Romantic Arias was Jonas Kaufmann's first solo album. It included arias from La Traviata, La boheme, Tosca and other operatic genres. Even today his performances are packed with the same fervor as then, and he still manages to swipe his audiences off their feet with his heartfelt voice and brilliant collection of music.
Although he possesses a repertoire that extends to several kinds of music and acting types, he is particularly known for his Spinto roles, for instance Don Jose in Carmen, Maurizio in Adriana Lecouvreur, Cavaradossi in Tosca and the title role in Don Carlos. Throughout his career, the Munich-born tenor has allowed his natural talents and inborn curiosity to lead his career. Jonas has had astonishingly broad and deep range of music and operatic skills. From bel canto to Verdi, and from Puccini heroes to Wagner, Kaufmann has a diverse variety of performances that speaks of his abilities and exceptional music aptitude. To witness live, the incredible talent of the tenor, buy your Jonas Kaufmann tickets today.
Jonas Kaufmann is also a proficient concert performer. He has appeared with some of the world's leading orchestras and conductors, including Berlin Philharmonic, Cleveland Orchestra, Franz Welser-Most and Sir Simon Rattle. Kaufmann has won many awards, including an ECHO Klassic for "Best Opera Recording", Musical America's "Vocalist of the Year" and the "Gerda Lissner Foundation Charity Prize". Jonas Kaufmann is also renowned for his commitment to bring classical music closer to the young generation.
