John Tesh has been playing trumpets and pianos since he was only six, studying from the teachers of The Julliard School and by high school was named member of New York State Symphonic Orchestra. Alongside, Tesh was also performing as the organist in a rock band during his teen years. However, his musical career did not take any serious turn until 1987, when renowned musician Yanni, who was Tesh’s good friend, formed a touring band. The latter requested Yanni to add him as a keyboardist to the band along where he was to play alongside drummer Charlie Adams and Joyce Imbesi. At the time Tesh was already busy with a full-time job at EntertainmentWeekly, yet he performed quite well in the hours-long rehearsals and only managed covering one of Yanni’s tours, in which he performed in twelve concerts including the Concert Series of 1988, after which his place was taken by Bradley Joseph. With Yanni’s assistance, Tesh signed his first record deal with Private Music.

By the mid of 1994, John Tesh was on his way to performing at Denver’s famous Red Rock Amphitheatre where he would give one of the best performances of his career. He played with Colorado Symphony Orchestra’s seventy-piece under conductor John Bisharat.
