Inspired by his mother who was a classically trained pianist, Walsh learnt to play the oboe and clarinet in his younger days. It was during his days at the Kent State University that he developed a decided affinity for rock music. It was during this period, extending from 1965-1969, that he joined the collegiate band Measles as their lead guitarist. Around the same period, Walsh also took the first steps towards a professional career as a musician when he signed up as the lead guitarist for the James Gang.
