James William Buffett, better known for his stage name – Jimmy Buffet, is a multitalented artist. He is not only a renowned singer, but also a songwriter, an author, a businessman, and a movie producer. He is involved in two restaurant chains that are even named after two of his best known songs, ‘Margaritaville’ and ‘Cheeseburger in Paradise’.
Born in Pascagoula, Mississippi, Jimmy Buffet spent a part of childhood in Mobile, Alabama, attending St. Ignatius School. He then moved to Fairhope, Alabama, where he did his high school graduation from McGill-Toolen Catholic High School in 1964. He received a bachelor's degree in history from the The University of Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg in 1969.
Jimmy developed an interest in music at an early age and began playing the guitar in his college years. After graduation, he worked as a reporter for Billboard magazine in Nashville, and broke the news of the separation of Flatt and Scruggs.
Initially, Jimmy started his musical career in Nashville, TN, as a country artist in the 1960s and released his debut album – Down to Earth, in 1970. The album managed to sell 324 copies. The master copy of his sophomore effort, however, got temporarily misplaced by the Barnaby Records, hindering its release. Buffet then moved to Key West in 1972, where he smuggled little marijuana from the Caribbean in order to help support himself. In the following year, Jimmy got signed to ABC-Dunhill Records, released A White Sport Coat and a Pink Crustacean, which resulted in forming his drunken-sailor persona. Jimmy’s commercial breakthrough came in 1977 with the platinum hit single ‘Changes in Latitudes, Changes in Attitudes’ that scored at #12 on the music charts, and also with the hit single ‘Margaritaville’, which ranked at #8.
This was the time when Jimmy Buffet toured occasionally, and spent most of his time on his 50-foot ketch Euphoria II. Jimmy then started travelling and performing in various clubs with his fake band consisting of Ms. Kitty Litter, Kay Pasa, and the renowned Marvin Gardens. It wasn’t until 1975, when Jimmy began touring with a real band. Till date, many members have come and gone, but the Coral Reefer Band continues to be around with Jimmy. The current band members include Michael Utley on the keyboards, Mac McAnally and Peter Mayer on the guitar and vocals, Ralph MacDonald on the percussion, Robert Greenidge on the percussion and steel drums, Jim Mayer on the bass guitar and vocals, Roger Guth on the drums, John Lovell on the trumpet, Doyle Grisham on the pedal steel, and Nadirah Shakoor and Tina Gullickson on the vocals.
The man has released several hit albums till date. To mention some of his most famous ones would include the 1985 compilation Songs You Know By Heart as it sold two million copies, and his 1992 release Boats Beaches Bars & Ballads, which went platinum. Jimmy’s massive success led him to establish his own Margaritaville Empire that included a record label and Margaritaville Store and Cafe outlets in Key West and New Orleans.
Jimmy’s other popular works include two of his best-selling books, entitled Tales from Margaritaville, which is a collection of short stories, and a novel called Where Is Joe Merchant?. He has also written children’s books, and received appreciation for two of these – The Jolly Man and Trouble Dolls.
