Janet Jackson
Known for her musical style and choreography, influencing a number of contemporary pop and R&B artists, Janet Damita Jo Jackson, is an American recording artist and entertainer.

She is ranked by Billboard magazine as one of the top ten best-selling music artists in the history of contemporary music. She has sold over 100 million albums worldwide. Jackson first performed on stage with her family at just the age of seven.

Jackson started her career as an actress with the variety television series The Jacksons in 1976 and went on to star in other television shows like Good Times and Diff'rent Strokes.

When she was sixteen, she signed a recording contract with A&M, releasing her self-titled debut album in 1982. Jackson had to face criticism for being yet another member of the Jackson family to become a recording artist.

Later in 1986, with her third studio album "Control", she began a long-term collaboration with record producers Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis.

Jackson soon started receiving recognition for her innovative music incorporating contemporary R&B with elements of rap music, sample loop, triple swing and industrial beats and was acknowledged as a role model for her socially conscious lyrics.

In 1991, Jackson signed multi-million dollar recording contracts with Virgin Records, which established her as one of the highest paid artists in the recording industry. Virgin released her album Janet in 1993. That same year she appeared in her first starring film role in Poetic Justice.

By the end of the decade Jackson was considered the second most successful recording artist of the 1990s. Released in 2001, "All for You" was her fifth consecutive studio album and marked at number one the Billboard 200 album charts.

To promote her ninth studio album, 20 Y.O., she appeared on the cover of Us Weekly in June 2006. The weekly became the magazine's best-selling issue. 20 Y.O. was released in September 2006, debuting at number two on the Billboard 200.

In 2007, Jackson was signed with the Island Def Jam Music Group releasing her new album titled "Discipline" the following year.

That same year, she was ranked the seventh richest woman in the entertainment business by Forbes magazine. Jackson also starred opposite Tyler Perry in the feature film "Why Did I Get Married?" which got off to a remarkable opening.

In February 2008, Janet Jackson took home the NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture for her role. For her album "Discipline", she and Jermaine Dupri severed as executive producers.

It was the first album on which Jackson did not co-write any of the material since 1984's Dream Street. Margeaux Watson of Entertainment Weekly referred to the lyrical content of the album "Discipline as "cheesy", while Allmusic's Andy Kellman described the album as "innocent" universal inviting as anything else in Janet's past.

Jackson has embarked on her fifth world tour the Rock Witchu Tour. Recently she has announced there would be no more singles released off of Discipline, as the Island Def Jam label had stopped promotion of this album.
