Hugo is a city in Washington County, in Minnesota, USA. It is in the Minneapolis-Saint Paul metro area, lying north of White Bear Lake on the border of the metropolitan boundary. It is a small commuter town, having a total area of 36 square miles, with a population of approximately 12000, where 31% of the residents report German ancestry and only 9% report Irish. There are quite a few lakes flowing through the City of Hugo, and the biggest one from these is the Oneka Lake, which is named for the Dakota word onakan, meaning to strike or knock off, rice into a canoe. To the south is Rice Lake where Mdewakanton Dakota from Mendota gathered wild rice. The true origin of the name 'Hugo' is not precisely identified, but is regular with the town's French history. It is believed that the name of the city has either been kept after Trevanion Hugu - a chief engineer of the Consolidated Elevator Company in Duluth and former Duluth mayor, and an early settler in the area, or after French author Victor Hugo.
The place, which is now called Hugo, initially started as a village site, consisting of about 3 square miles of total area. The original explorers in the area are expected to be the Dakota tribes. Then, in 1850, came the French immigrants and French Canadians, becoming the first stable colonizers. These first pioneers came to the area when the Lake Superior and Mississippi Railroad established a station which was called Centerville Station, due to the proximity of the railroad depot to the established City of Centerville. Later, in 1906, there were about 258 people in the Centerville Station area, who then decided to incorporate as the Village of Hugo. Over the next few years, the village sustained to live as a small farming and a railroad community, until 1972, when the Township of Oneka was united with the Village of Hugo, and in addition to getting incorporated, Hugo became a boom town.
There are many recreation opportunities in the area. Several parks, golf courses, and ice arenas have been situated throughout the City of Hugo. The most famous pales to pay a visit in the town include the Oneka Ridge Golf Course, Festival Foods (a grocery store), Blacksmith Lounge & Broaster (restaurant), Waterworks Beach Club, Trio Inn, Saint Paul Central Library and a lot more.
