Apart from the music that has clicked with fans, Hoodie Allen promotes his individuality which has turned many heads. He is not a typical rapper, rather he is a college educated music nerd, who is not afraid to try the unconcvnetional. The enthusiasm with which he makes music and his passionate outreach to fans has made Hoodie Allen a star. His recent sold out shows are a testimony to that.
To engage fans, Allen holds a series of live streamed video chats and asks trivia questions. Fans who answer first get the chance to be called out on air. Moreover, the absence of a major publicity team in Allen’s setup is compensated by his loyal fans or the “Hoodie Mob”. Fans are assigned tasks of creating publicity for an event, by handing out posters or flliers. Then depending on the completion of the tasks assigned, they get the chance to meet Hoodie Allen or get free Hoodie Allen merchandise.
Born as Steven A. Markowitz, he was raised in Plainview, Long Island, New York. While growing up he used to write lyrics and perfrom raps at his house parties or for his friends. He attended the University of Pensylvannia and was nicknamed “Hoodie”; according to Markowitz “a rapper name that would stick in peoples’ minds”. After graduating in 2010, he was employed at Google. Along with his daytime job, he used to schedule concerts and reply to fans at night. Finally he decided to leave his lucrative job and puruse his career as an artist.
Steven Markowitz was initially a part of a duo, along with Obey City. In 2010, Obey left but Markowitz carried on with his musical dream adopting the name Hoodie Allen. He collaborated with RJ Ferguson to release the mix tape “Pep Rally”. In 2011, he released another mix tape titled ‘Leap Year’. In the first week of its release, there were two hundred and fifty thousand hits on soundcloud for the album. The album talked about his experience of leaving everything behind and the leap of faith he took to follow his passion. To publicise the album he went on a fifteen city tour.
In April 2012, Allen released another album which he had been working on for five months. Unlike the previous albums which used sample beats, the beats of this album were made from scratch. Titled “All American”, this album debuted at number one on i Tunes. To promote the album, a twenty two stop tour was planned across America. Along with that, an overseas tour of UK was also scheduled; the first overseas tour for Hoody Allen. The “All American” EP made it to the number ten spot on Billboard’s Top Albums.
In February of 2013 he released another mix tape, titled “Crew Cuts”. Like his previous albums, this too was made avaialbale for free download on the net. The album is his greatest departure from mainstream music. The album has six collaborations with artists like Jared Evan, G-Eazy, Chiddy Bang and Skizzy Mars. His latest album released in August 2013, is named “Americoustic”. An instant hit with his fans, it has received good reviews from critics as well.
