Described as “the world’s most famous unknown band” by the Rolling Stone magazine, The Good Rats’ popularity continues to rise worldwide. Their fan base includes some of the most distinguished names in the music industry; Jon Bon Jovi, Billy Joel, Kiss etc. Hailing from Long Island, this pop/rock/blues band formed in 1964 when five students from the St. Johns University stepped into the realm of music with U-Men. The 2008’s Long Island Music Hall of Famers first tasted success with their debut album which released in 1969. We are the Good Rats, Joey Ferrari, If You Stay by Me, Gotta Get Back, Family Portrait are some of the songs from the album with first two being the biggest hits. At the time the band’s line up comprised Ted Haenlein, Frank Stapleton, Eric Crane, Denny Ryan and Peppi Marchello. It changed in 1972 before the release of their second album called Tasty which hit the shelves in 1974.
This time around, the band consisted of Peppi and Mickey Marchello, John Gatto, Lenny Kotke and Joe Franco Tasty is considered as one of the biggest hits by The Good Rats containing songs such as Fireball Express, Papa Poppa, Klash-ka-Bobet, Back to my Music, Tasty etc.. The album also brings to the table some jazz influences along with other styles such as hard and progressiverock. In later years the band delivered a series of albums namely Ratcity in Blue, Birth comes to Us All, Great American Music, Tasty Seconds, From Rats to Riches etc.
However the recent offerings include Blue Collar Rats: The Lost Archives, Lets Have Another Beer and Rats The Way You Like ‘em. Blue Collar Rats: The Lost Archives could be considered as a collection of high-on-energy songs with Peppi at his best as the lead vocalist. Boom Boom, Living for Number One, he’s Magic, Here’s to you Rock and Roll and Lost in the Lights are some of the tracks from the album. Rats the Way You Like ‘em also features a variety of hits. In 2000s The Good Rats were seen performing endlessly all across New York, Connecticut and New Jersey. Besides local venues they also play annually at their festival called Ratstock which is held every summer. Moreover Peppi Marchello, the founder of the group also performs more than hundred shows every year. These include elaborate concerts, private events, outdoor festivals, clubs and bars. Also, he is the man behind the release of the album Blue Collar Rats: The Lost Archives which consists of 19 unreleased songs made in the 1970s and ‘80s.
