Gogol Bordella is a multi-ethnic Gypsy punk band that was formulated in the summer of 1999. the band originates from the Lower East Side of the big apple, New York City and has been extremely successful in creating a niche in the music industry. the group is mostly remembered for their exceptional onstage performances.

The core inspiration behind the music of the band is their Gypsy music. One of the reasons behind this inspiration is the Eastern European roots of the band members. In order to create the complexity and natural perspective of Gypsy music, various instruments are used including cabaret, punk, and dub as well as multiple languages.

The word Bordello means a brother or in simpler terms a gentleman's club. And Gogol is derived from Nikoli Gogol who is known in the annals of history as a true smuggler of Ukrainian culture into Russian society. Putting these two together, the virtual concept behind the meaning of the band is the unique methodology of smuggling Eastern culture into the western sphere of life. The band members have finally come to terms and accepted this name of the band, though there were different twists and turns before coming to reason with this name. The band was originally titled H?tz and the B?la Bart?ks. Due to the belief that people would not be able to decipher the meaning and philosophy behind the names, the title was soon changed.

The motivation and inspiration of the group comes from the leader and main singer of the group Eugene H?tz's taste in music. Eugene's taste was spun out of black market tapes of the Birthday Party and Einst?rzande Neubauten in his native country Ukraine. His memories and recollections provided the ignited perspectives and ideas that drive home amazing and different songs.

According to the singer, his love for gypsy music and passion for mystical tunes have come from his own life and its turning points. Eugene was evacuated to western Ukraine in 1986 following the Chernobyl disaster. And that is where the singer became totally mesmerized by the mystical, outsider qualities of gypsy music. Living as a refugee in Poland, Hungary, Austria, and Italy before moving to the United States in 1993, he experienced life as an outsider himself.

Eugene was adamant in regards to creating his inner spirit in the form of music that he was completely mesmerized with. His primary objective was to create a group that could create the music of his soul. Eugene was successful in garnering a band with the likes of Sergey Rjabtzev on fiddle. Sergey was a former theater director from Moscow and has given animation and color to the group.

Music History
The band played their first show as the unofficial band at an after-hours club called Pizdetz on Ridge Street, where they became the house band. After continuous gigs on the road, Gogol Bordello's first single was released in 1999. in totality, the band has produced four full length albums. One of the most celebrated aspects of the band has been their involvement in music fairs, tours and live performances. The band does exceptionally well during live performances and has produced some classic songs that have been loved the world over. The band has also toured tirelessly throughout Europe and America and has performed with diverse bands like Primus, Flogging Molly, and Cake.

The band started out playing at Russian weddings and other European festivities, but during the course of time, their music started evolving into a mystical experience for the hippy and young music lovers of New York City. And the harbinger of their local success was their single When the Trickster Comes a-Pokin' in 1999. over the course of several years, different musicians have been added into the band to further diversify their music essence. Solofar and Kazatchkoff were replaced by accordionist Yuri Lemeshev, and two Israelis, guitarist Oren Kaplan and saxophonist Ori Kaplan.

The main reason behind the immediate rise to fame in the big apple has been the predominant role and play of the band leader H?tz. His weekly performances at different rendezvous points in New York City gave him the acceptance and window of opportunity to display and hone his skills. His specialty has always being an amalgamation of Ukrainians, Russians, Gypsies, and Bulgarians music.

The songs of the band are mystical and with meaning. The band members try to instill a different perspective all linking them into the realm of gypsy magic. The two songs that brought them fame were Start Wearing Purple from their first album and Voi-La Intruder. Another song that was later released that got great reviews was Occurrence on the Border. Start Wearing Purple was re-recorded and a video was produced for their third LP, Gypsy Punks: Underdog World Strike and became their first North American single. The song and variations thereof can be heard throughout the 2005 movie Everything Is Illuminated. The song has given the immortality in the world of music. People have loved the song and have labeled the song as the true identity of the group.

The band tries to ensure that their songs have differentiators associated with it and that the songs and albums do not match a single dimension. Creativity and variance needs to spark from the songs and albums. I Would Never Wanna Be Young Again has a short interlude of an arrangement of Franz Schubert's Symphony No. 8 (Unfinished) in B minor played on strings. These kind of variances and intriguing aspects of tune give the song and the music a different meaning all together. Another all time favorite for the music lovers has been Not a Crime and Wonderlust King.

Music from the band has been incorporated into different movies and television serials. Through The Roof 'n' Underground is featured several times in the movie Wristcutters: A Love Story. and Wonderlust King was featured in the trailer for the Morgan Spurlock documentary Where in the World is Osama Bin Laden?

Gogol Bordello Affiliations
Gogol Bordello has performed for various senior musicians and has taken part in different gigs. On one occasion, Gogol Bordello collaborated with Madonna. H?tz and Ryabtsev performed La Isla Bonita / Lela Pala Tute with Madonna at the London Live Earth concert on July 7, 2007. This was one of the most memorable experiences for the group.

The group has made a recent collaboration with the Balkan Beat Box under the name of J.U.F., (Jewish-Ukrainishe Freundschaft) in 2004 by Stinky Records. The name is inspired by the German punk-industrial band DAF (Deutsch-Amerikanische Freundschaft), which again was inspired by GDR state organization Deutsch-Sowjetische Freundschaft (German-Soviet Friendship). The inspiration has given birth to a new rhythm of music. The group has also come forth with their albums. The second J.U.F. 2 album, entitled Balkan Reggaeton is due out in 2008. and this album is much awaited.
