The diesel engines that are used to propel the ship churn up a total of six hundred horsepower. General Jackson sails at around four to eight miles per hour on average whereas it can travel up to thirteen miles per hour when required. It started its life as a source of attracting customers to the Opryland USA theme park but it was kept in service regardless of the fact that the theme park was closed in the year 1997.
 
General Jackson exists and operates today in order to fulfill one major purpose which is to replicate the showboats of yesteryears. These were showboats which sailed on the many rivers in the United States during the nineteenth century. The boat remains in full function during the primary season which starts in the month of March and continues on till December. During this time, the boat makes a total of two cruises on each single day, one of which starts during the day time and the other one which starts in the evening and the latter one also includes a proper dining session as well most of the time.
