The Four Tops teamed up in high school when Levi Stubbs, Obie Benson, Roquel Davis and Duke got together with the same area of interest and joined hands to make music together. Starting off from a small scale, they got the opportunity to get into a deal with Chess Records in the mid nineties and it was a good start to step into the music industry and introduce its own style of soul, jazz and R&B music. It also got into a contract with the Columbia and Riverside Records but didn’t manage to bring any major hit on the music charts. Despite this, the group did well and was able to achieve national reach with the frequent live tours conducted in several cities.
In the late fifties, the group joined the famous Motown Record Company. This was the time, it recorded a number of jazz singles such as Run Run Run, My Baby Loves Me and others. With years of practicing, by the mid sixties, the group composed an instrumental song that was later changed into a pop single named ‘Baby I need your loving’. This was the turning point in its career and got it ranked on the US Billboard pop charts at 11th position. It didn’t take long for the song to cross the boundaries of fame and helped the group increase its fan following. This single was a trend setter for hits and was followed by a number of songs that made it straight to the top positions on music charts. They include Ask The Lonely, Without The One You Love, It’s The Same Old Song and Something About You. The era of seventies, provided the group with experience of working with one of the top bands of the music industry, The Supremes and came up with albums such as The Magnificent Seven. The Four Tops did not stick to Motown Records only but signed deal with Casablanca and ABC Records as well. It kept on experimenting and the era of eighties got it into a deal with Motown Records again. From the late eighties onwards till the nineties, the group released only one studio album and focused on the live performances and tours.
