Highly anticipated music and art festival known as “FloydFest” returns this summer. Organized annually at the Blue Ridge Mountains, next to the Blue Ridge Parkaway in Floyd, Virginia, the event has attracted thousands since it was founded and every year, it features some of the most diverse musicians. The first ever edition of this festival took place in 2002. Today, it has clocked more than a decade of successful and popular concerts over a time period of four days. On site camping is part of the festival, with its many stages featuring artists and bands playing everything from reggae, rock and bluegrass to folk, cajun, yiddish, appalachian, African to zydeco. FloydFest is a world music and arts festival. Therefore, it also features events aside from concerts, including dance workshops, local arts and crafts features, morning yoga lesson, poetry readings, storytelling and a special Children's Universe tent. Each festival also has its own theme; 2002's theme was the Floyd County World Music Festival with 2003's being the Out of this World Music festival. Other themes have included Rock of Ages, Midsummer's Dream, Roots Alive, Family Affair, It's in the Mix, Breaking Ground, Revival, Lovers Rock, The Experience and Rise & Shine, which was the 2013 festival's theme.
In 2013, the festival played host to some the live performances of some of the finest musicians. The lineup included Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros, Old Crow Medicine Show, The Lumineers, Brandi Carlile, John Butler Trio, Gogol Bordello, Citizen Cope, Trampled by Turtles and Yonder Mountain String Band amongst others. It became one of the most attended festivals in the US in 2013.
This time, the lineup includes Ms. Lauryn Hill, Ben Harper and Charlie Musselwhite, Rober Randolph and The Family Band, Lettuce and Conspirator, Buddy Guy and Thievery Corporation. The festival will be held for thirteenth time and will feature more than one hundred artists performing on ten different stages. Other than music, the festival will also feature a hundred more artisans putting up everything from specially brewed signature beverages to a spectacular Healing Arts Village.
The 2014 edition of this festival artists and bands such as Ray LaMontagne, Michael Franti and Spearhead, Ziggy Marley, Donna the Buffalo, JJ Grey and Mofro, The London Souls and The Lee Boys will be featured. The festival has received rave reviews from the media and the people, having also been voted as the Best Large Music Venue. The festival is famous for its peace, love and music philosophy and will be feauturing Buddy Guy this year. He is a world famous blues musician known for influencing the likes of Eric Clapton, Stevie Ray Vaughn and Jimmy Page.
A performer of the Chicago blues strainof music, Guy rose to fame in the sixties as part of the Muddy Waters band. Since then, he has gone on to become a living legend. He is ranked as one of the “100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time” by Rolling Stone. He has won six Grammy Awards, the National Medal of Arts from the President, Billboard's The Century Award, twenty three W.C. Handy Awards, the Kennedy Center Honors and is an inductee of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
