The English Beat, more popularly known as just The Beat is a British band that originated from Birmingham. The band was founded in 1978 by a group of musician friends namely singer Ranking Roger, drummer Everett Morton, saxophone player Saxa, guitarist Dave Wakeling and Andy Cox. English Beat mainly played music in genres like new wave, ska and 2 Tone. The band was active till 1983 and then after a long hiatus it made a comeback in 2003. In 2006 the band was officially revived and since then, it has been actively playing gigs and concerts in various cities. The current lineup consists of Dave Wakeling, drummer Rhythmm Epkins, saxophone player Matt Morrish, bassist Roger Bueno and keyboard player Kevin Lum. Over the years The English Beat has worked with big music labels like EMI Records, London, Go Feet Records, Chrysalis and Sire Records.
The first single recorded by English Beat was basically a cover song titled “The Tears of a Clown” that was originally sung by the famous soul and rock n roll group The Miracles. The first studio album by English Beat was titled I Just Can’t Stop it and it was released in 1980 by Go feet Records. The album contained twelve tracks such as “Two Swords,” “Noise in the World,” “Can’t Get Used to Losing You,” “Mirror in the Bathroom,” “Rough Ride” and “Best Friend.” The album was considered a superb effort by the band as it received full stars from Allmusic and Rolling Stone Album Guide. The album went on to chart at #3 in UK and #142 on US Billboard. It also earned a gold certification in UK.
The very next year Wha’ppen? went in music stores, it was recorded at the Roundhouse Studio in London and released by Go Feet. This album again proved to be a fine effort by English Beat, it received positive reviews from critics and went on to chart at #3, #20 and #126 in UK, New Zealand and the US respectively. The album went silver in UK. Special beat Service till date remains the third and last studio album that was released in 1983 and after this the band went into a hiatus. Special Beat Service contained tracks like “Sole Salvation,” “Pato and Roger a Go Talk,” “Sugar and Stress,” “End of the Party” and “Spar Wid Me.”
Some of the singles that managed to hit the UK and US charts include “Tears of a Clown,” “Mirror in the Bathroom,” “Too Nice to Talk to,” “Save it for Later,” “I Confess,” “Hands Off….She is Mine,” “Can’t Get Used to Losing You” and “Hit It.” Compilation albums by English Beat are What is Beat?, The Platinum Collection, B.P.M The Verys Best of the Beat, Beat This!
