The Nashville Symphony: Dueling Pianos concert is being organized by a symphony orchestra founded in 1946 and that today calls the Schermerhorn Symphony Center home. Its principal conductor is Giancarlo Guerrero, who will be leading this concert, and it performs a breathtaking one hundred and forty concerts each year. It traces its history back to the twenties to a group of amateur and pro musicians founded by George Pullen Jackson, then a professor at the Vanderbilt University and a music critic at the Nashville Banner. The group was then reformed as an orchestra by Walter Sharp with the first conductor and music director of the group being William Strickland.
The Nashville Symphony was founded and prospered under the leadership of William Strickland who set high standards for the orchestra’s performances. In 1983, Kenneth Schermerhorn became the symphony’s principal conductor and music director, staying with the orchestra for twenty two good years until he passed away in 2005. Giancarlo Guerrero became the seventh music director of the Nashville Symphony in 2007 and has led the orchestra since then, instrumental in its winning the highly coveted ASCAP Award for Programming of Contemporary Music.
