Malcolm John Rebennack or Dr. John has been doing music for quite a long time. And he happens to be the one of the few artists who has able to maintain uniqueness in their music. With decades of experience behind his back, Dr. John is nothing less than musical heritage within himself. He has, and still continues to inspire generations, through his evergreen music.
Hailing from New Orleans, Dr. John stepped into the music industry back in 1950s when he started playing at gigs with the local bands like the Skyliners, the Loafers, and the Thunderbirds; and also recorded several hit songs with them. Unfortunately he injured his left ring finger as he was shot when trying to protect his fellow band member. Due to that, he had to say goodbye to guitar and shifted his concentration towards piano and organ. Soon enough, Dr. John mastered both of these instruments as well and enjoyed the status of being one of the most demanded session musician back in the 60s. During his days as a session musician he also worked with the musical mights such as Van Morrison, Sonny & Cher, and Aretha Franklin.
After playing with various popular acts of that time, Dr. John finally decided to take the center stage as he began his solo career back in the late 60s. It was in 1968 when he released his debut album titled Gris-Gris, which also came out to be his first break through solo album. Dr. John captivated the hearts of many even with his first solo album and started to be known as Dr. John the Night Tripper. What made his music so discrete was the perfect blend of different genres like R&B, Funk, Psychedelic rock and Blues. It was 'Gris-Gris' that directed him to the road to being the Legend in what he does the best. Some other albums that followed and further added up to his fame included his 1971's release Sun Moon and Herbs and his 1973's album In the Right Place. The former one also included guest appearances by legendary Eric Clapton and Mick Jagger while the latter one charted hits like 'Such a Night' and 'Right Place Wrong Time'.
On top of being a 4 time Grammy Award winner, Dr. John also became the very first North American musician since 1970 who received prestigious Academie Charles Cros 57eme Palmares award for his amazing work in "N'awlinz Dis Dat or D'udda". Dr. John also released his Hurricane Katrina Benefit Disc, out of which, "Sippiana Hericane" received a Grammy Nomination. To help direct the attention of the entire world towards the post-Katrina New Orleans, Dr. John released an album entitled "City that Care Forgot". The album was released in 2008 and in the following year it received a Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Blues Album. Not just that, the album received a major critical acclaim and went to be known as his finest piece of art that he gave in past two decades.
Now even after doing music for almost five decades, Dr. John still goes on to astonish his fans with his music and, amuse huge amount of audiences around the globe with his unexplainably amazing live performances. He still consistently tours all across the world and delights the audience with the magic of his music. Some of you, who are not really his all time fans might think that after all these years his charisma and energy towards his live performances might have faded away, but that's definitely not the case. As with abundant experience in the field of music, Dr. John is now capable of presenting his form of art in the most creative way possible.
Dr. John reprised his ever so famous persona of being Dr. John the Night Tripper back in 2006 at the Bonnaroo Music Festival, and flaunted his consistently & devotion towards music to the whole world.
With same level of allure and enthusiasm, Dr. John is back on road with his highly anticipated concert tour.
