When its comes to underground hip hop groups, Dilated Peoples stand amongst some of the well reputed underground hip hop groups that is currently residing in California.
Although their fame is mainly contained with in underground hip hop community they did, however, received some main stream exposure apart from their collaboration with Kanye West on a song titled This Way, in 2004. In addition to that, two of their songs This Way and Worst Comes to Worst made it in Top 40 on UK Singles Chart.
The group comprises of rapper Rakaa Iriscience, DJ Babu and rapper and producer Evidence, which joined forces to form up Dilated Peoples in 1992. The band debuted with Third Degree that was later followed by Work the Angles on ABB Records.
After earning a sound exposure to underground hip hop community they recorded another one of their albums titled Imagery, Battle Hymns & Political Party.
Although the album wasnt officially released, still it is possessed by a number of fans in form of a bootleg. Their next release was seen in 2000, when they released The Platform after signing a record deal with Capitol Records.
Dilated Peoples released their third studio album in 2004 titled Neighborhood Watch. The album featured their single Whos Who? that was included on Need for Speed: Underground and SSX 3 as its sound tracks and also This Way, which was produced by Kanye West.
Back Again was the first single from their recently released album 20/20 that was featured as a sound track on the Fight Night Round 3. The album was released in 2006 on Capitol Records.
Tha Alkaholiks, another west coast rap group, is also affiliated with Dilated Peoples and has collaborated with them on several occasions including on Right On, a track from their album The Platform and on Heavy Rotation from Expansion Team, which was released in 2001.
Defari, a west coast rapper, frequently collaborated with Dilated People, as the group helped him launch his career, which is why Defari is featured on all of the Dilated Peoples albums on tracks including Ear Drums Pop (Remix), Defari Interlude, Closed Session and Olde English. On the other hand, Dilated Peoples also featured on Odds & Evens, an album by Defari.
The Alchemist has also collaborated with Dilated Peoples on almost all the albums and produced five songs from their album The Platform, 3 from the Expansion Team, 4 from Neighborhood Watch and two from 20/20.
The Expansion Team, which was released in 2001, was the groups second album and is also considered their best album and features one of their biggest hit Worst Comes to Worst that featured Mobb Deeps vocal sample from Survival of the Fittest and a musical sample from I Forgot To Be Your Lover by William Bell.
On this album Dilated Peoples collaborated with renowned producers like The Alchemist, Da Beatminerz, Juju of the Beatnuts and ?uestlove of The Roots.
As compared to their previous albums, The Platform and Expansion Team, Dilated Peoples third album Neighborhood Watch was not that much of a success. Bands singles, Poisonous and Marathon were also featured on this album.
