Based in Des Moines, Iowa, DMS is a U.S symphony orchestra that was set up in 1937. Joseph Giunta is its conductor at present. DMS was founded as the Des Moines Civic Orchestra. It performed its opening show in 1937 as a combined effort among the Drake University musicians and community. After a year, the symphony went to TRHS and stayed there until 1948. In 1954, it come back to Hoyt Sherman and finally moved to North High School after 3 years. The 67-68 season was stretched from 4 to 5 shows but in 1969 it planned to disband relations with DU which finally took place in 1974.
Krasnapolsky lead the season in 1977 while Joseph Giunta became the musical director of Des Moines Symphony in 1989 and under him the orchestra has emerged as a marvelous group well-recognized in the entire region. Today, DMS is recognized as one of the most prominent orchestras in the country. It performs Education Concerts, Family, Masterworks and Pops. In addition, it also performs for special concerts. The DMS Academy was set up in 2003. It is only a few of the orchestras in the country to support a music school as a part of its commitment.
