Dawn Upshaw
A charismatic opera singer in a rock star casing - Dawn Upshaw is a world-renowned American soprano described as one of the most consequential performers of our time by the Los Angeles Times.
Born July 17, 1960 in Nashville, Tennessee, she began her vocal career as a talented Rich East High School singer in Park Forest, Illinois. She received her Bachelors of Arts in the year 1982 from Illinois Wesleyan University and then went on to study voice with Ellen Faull at the Manhattan School of Music in New York.
She earned her Masters in Arts in the year 1984. She has also attended courses given by Jan DeGaetani at the Aspen (Colorado) Music School. She currently holds an honorary Doctor of Arts, honoris causa, from Yale University, the Manhattan School of Music, Illinois Wesleyan University and Allegheny College. Upshaw is married and a mother of two. She lives near New York.
She was a winner of the Young Concert Artists auditions in the year 1984 and the Walter M. Naumburg Competition in the year 1985, and was a member of the Metropolitan Opera Young Artists Development Program. Since her start in 1984, Upshaw has made over 300 appearances at the Metropolitan Opera - one of the most prestigious opera of all times.
The recipient of several Grammy Awards and Edison Prize-winning discs, Upshaw sings both opera and art songs with equal ease and her repertoire extends from Baroque to contemporary. Many composers, including John Harbison, Esa-Pekka Salonen and Kaija Saariaho, have written for her, and her artistic achievements are extensive. On September 25, 2007 she was awarded a MacArthur Foundation genius grant.
Dawn Upshaw came to international fame with her million-selling recording in the year 1993 of the hauntingly powerful Symphony No 3 by Henryk G?recki, known as the Symphony of Sorrowful Songs (Symfonia piesni zalosnych), with David Zinman.
Over the past ten year period, she has premiered more than 25 new works and has embraced several works created for her, including the Grawemeyer Award-winning opera LAmour de Loin by Kaija Saariaho, The Great Gatsby by John Harbison, the nativity oratorio El Ni?o by John Adams, and Osvaldo Golijov's highly acclaimed chamber opera Ainadamar and song cycle Ayre.
Her remarkable ability to transform her vocal range from the high pitched opera singing to the hard throw of rock songs has landed her in numerous albums other than her forte of opera. Consequently, in addition to her operatic recordings, she has also sung the title role in the first complete recording of the score of Gershwin's Oh, Kay! She has also recorded an album of songs by Vernon Duke. Her engagements with James Levine over the years have led to a recording of Debussy songs in the year 1997.
She tours regularly with piano accompanist Richard Goode. Margo Garrett and Gilbert Kalish are also long-standing partners. She has worked with the director Peter Sellars many times, including his staging of H?ndel's Theodora at Glyndebourne, his Paris production of Stravinsky's The Rake's Progress (as part of the Los Angeles Philharmonic and Esa-Pekka Salonen's month-long residency at the The?tre du Ch?telet in the year 1996), a staging of Bach's cantata BWV 199, presented in the 1995-96 season at New York's 92nd Street Y, and the Salzburg Festival production of Olivier Messiaen's St Fran?ois d'Assise in the year 1998.
Dawn Upshaw has been honored as a guest of the President of the United States Bill Clinton and Mrs. Hilary Clinton, the First Lady, on the NBC special, Christmas in Washington. The BBC presented a prime-time telecast of her in the year 1996s London Proms Concert, Dawn at Dusk, in which she performed numerous songs from the American musical theater.
Dawn Upshaw joined the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra as Artistic Partner beginning with the year 2007-08, and she is also the Artistic Director of the Graduate Program in Vocal Arts at the Bard College Conservatory of Music. The Conservatory of Music accepted its first students in the academic year 2006-2007. She also is a current faculty member at the Tangle wood Music Center.
Upshaw was diagnosed with early-stage breast cancer and began aggressive treatment in November, 2006. According to her manager, Upshaw's current prognosis is excellent.
