Hailing from Scotland, Colin Currie started his musical career in 1998, by playing percussion and timpani with both, The European Union Youth Orchestra of Scotland and The Royal Academy of Music. However, chamber music and solo performance were his main focus at that time. He took part in the Shell/LSO Competition in 1992, and gained national prominence by winning the Gold Medal. Two years later, he became the first finalist of the BBC's "Young Musician of the Year" contest. Colin is now ranked among the most charismatic young artists of contemporary music scene.
Today, Colin Currie is a regular performer and plays with several conductors and orchestras worldwide. Some of the renowned composers that Collin has worked with include, Simon Holt and Einojuhani Rautavaara. Other than that, he is also the leader of a percussion ensemble called The Colin Currie Group. This band performs Steve Reich's music. This energetic percussion ensemble continues to earn critical acclaim for its numerous performances. Recently, the ensemble made its European debut, leading to its highly successful international introduction.
As a solo artist, Collin has gained immense critical acclaim as well. The Guardian commented that he was, "thrillingly athletic, a joy to watch as well as to hear" in 2013. Collin has recorded several contemporary percussion concertos and has released a solo album titled, "Borrowed Time". His recordings for Percussion Concerto of Jennifer Higdon received a Grammy Award in the category of "Best Contemporary Composition".
To share his knowledge with aspiring young musicians, Colin Currie serves as the visiting professor at the Royal Academy of Music and the Royal Conservatoire. There, he teaches Solo-Percussion. In 2011, Collin took the post of Artist in Residence at the Southbank Centre in London.
Before gaining fame, Collin has worked with composers like Elliott Carter, Jennifer Higdon, Kurt Schwertsik, Alexander Goehr, Nico Muhly and Julia Wolfe. Collin has now embarked on his solo career as one of the leading musicians of the day, and his 2013-2014 season highlights include two world premieres: a new Percussion Concerto by Andrew Norman with the Utah Symphony/Thierry Fischer and Tapdance by Louis Andriessen.
Other engagements include opening with the Cleveland Orchestra, Nagoya Philharmonic and Sao Paulo Symphony. Besides this, Collin recently recorded his new CD "Since Brass, Nor Stone," and is pleased to announce its release. It features Alexander Goehr's music along with immense rhythmic variety.
Percussionist Daniel Druckman will be joining him in the upcoming concert as well. He is well recognized as a soloist, orchestral and chamber musician. Daniel has made appearances as a soloist with the American Composer's Orchestra, the Los Angeles Philharmonic and The New York Philharmonic's Horizons concerts. He has presented works by Elliott Carter, Milton Babbitt, Jacob Druckman, Oliver Knussen, Aaron Jay Kernis, Poul Ruders, Ralph Shapey, Charles Wuorinen and Joseph Schwantner. Recently, he collaborated with Fred Sherry at BargeMusic, Alan Feinberg at Dartmouth College and Dawn Upshaw at Carnegie Hall.
His recent solo recordings include Elliott Carter's Eight Pieces for Four Timpani on Bridge Records and Jacob Druckman's Reflections on the Nature of Water on Koch International. Druckman is a faculty member of The Juilliard School, where he serves as the chairman of the percussion department and director of the percussion ensemble.
