Born on May 28, 1985 in Newbury Park, California, USA, Caillat's birth name is Colbie Marie Caillat. Even her father, Ken Caillat, is an important part of the music industry, as the audio engineer and producer is renowned for coproducing the 70's multimillion-selling albums - Rumours and Tusk, of Fleetwood Mac. While studying piano and vocals, she grew up in Malibu and Ventura County, surrounded by music. Colbie Caillat got inspired by Lauryn Hill and wanted to become a vocalist herself and took music more seriously from there onwards. At the age of 11, her parents encouraged her to take singing lessons. Soon after, Caillat started to sing in school performances and a various talent shows. At the age of 15, she met the producer Mikal Blue, famous for his work with Five for Fighting and Carrie Underwood, who then asked her to record vocals for some techno tracks he was producing for St. John Knit's fashion shows. Caillat spent her teenage years working together with Blue by writing and continuing recording tracks, which began in 2004, for the following few years. Soon after, Colbie Caillat also learned to play guitar and wrote her first song at the age of 19. Jason Reeves, a songwriter form LA, then joined her and co-wrote a lot of songs with her, while becoming her musical partner as well. Caillat received help in the studio from both, Blue and Reeves, and recorded demos of several of the tunes, which ultimately appeared on her debut album - Coco.
Success knocked on Colbie Marie Caillat's door when she posted her single 'Bubbly' on her MySpace page. Her profile started receiving thousands of hits on a daily basis as the buzz of her song spread. The girl did not even do any marketing campaign for this track; still it received an overwhelming response. Soon she was hyped by the popular magazine Rolling Stone to have gained a position among the top female artists on MySpace after she had made more than 6,200 friends on the popular social-networking site. This unexpected publicity led to even more visits by new visitors on Caillat's page, and she ultimately became the No.1 on MySpace unsigned artist throughout the next four months. Her profile had received over 3 million visits and 10 million plays before she was signed to any label. Universal Records soon grabbed the opportunity to sign this popular new artiste, in 2007.
Caillat then started working on her first studio album, Coco, with her longtime partners, Blue and Reeves and released it in July of 2007. The album comprised her hit singles like 'Bubbly', 'Realize', and 'The Little Things'. The album peaked at the iTunes chart and debuted at No.5 on the Billboard Top 200, whereas 'Bubbly' turned out to be the iTunes Single of the Week. In addition, Caillat spent a lot of her time touring, playing for large audiences as the opening act for Lifehouse and The Goo Goo Dolls on their U.S. tour, during the year of 2007.
In the following year (2008), Caillat recorded a duet song 'Lucky', with the popular artiste Jason Mraz, for his album We Sing, We Dance, We Steal Things. Caillat also recorded a cover of the song 'Kiss the Girl' from The Little Mermaid for Disney's DisneyMania vol. 6 CD that same year.
