Born on May 28, 1985 in Newbury Park, California, USA, Caillat's birth name is Colbie Marie Caillat. Even her father, Ken Caillat, is an important part of the music industry, as the audio engineer and producer is renowned for coproducing the 70's multimillion-selling albums - Rumours and Tusk, of Fleetwood Mac. While studying piano and vocals, she grew up in Malibu and Ventura County, surrounded by music. Colbie Caillat got inspired by Lauryn Hill and wanted to become a vocalist herself and took music more seriously from there onwards. At the age of 11, her parents encouraged her to take singing lessons. Soon after, Caillat started to sing in school performances and a various talent shows. At the age of 15, she met the producer Mikal Blue, famous for his work with Five for Fighting and Carrie Underwood, who then asked her to record vocals for some techno tracks he was producing for St. John Knit's fashion shows. Caillat spent her teenage years working together with Blue by writing and continuing recording tracks, which began in 2004, for the following few years.
