Cock Sparrer is a British punk rock band that came into being in 1972 in London. The band consisted of members who lived around the East End of London. The band never garnered prominent commercial success but is considered to be one of the most influential bands facilitating the evolution of street-punk and the Oi! genre of rock music. The latter originated in the 70’s in the United Kingdom and is associated with the youth belonging to the working class. Their songs, though not widely popular themselves have been covered by many hardcore rock bands. Their music mostly talks about the challenges of the working class life as well as its many enjoyable aspects despite the harshness.
 
Cock Sparrer was originally formed by a group of school fellows including Steve Bruce, Steve Burgess, Colin McFaull and Mick Beaufoy. These four lads had known each other since they were eleven years old. In their initial years they played around in school together and later on all over the pubs and nightclubs in London where they eventually coined a new genre of music with its own distinct sound, later to be known as street-punk. The band is most known for its singing in the distinct Cockney accent.
 
The band later approached Malcolm McLaren, a record producer, with their demo in 1976. McLaren liked this group of young, passionate rockers and intended to launch them with his other popular discovery the Sex Pistols. There are several versions surrounding the story as to why that deal didn’t go through, the most viable one of which is the band’s refusal to conform their appearance to McLaren’s preferences who wanted them to have the same hair styles. This latter explanation seems to be the most valid because this group of four musicians appeared to be the most heterogeneous and non-uniform group of people. They each carried different hairstyles and wore clothes that appeared to be a mixture of wardrobe oddities thrown together. In an era when band members used to sport the same hairstyles and appearance, Cock Sparrer continued to maintain this non-conformist attitude.
 
By the late 70s the punk revolution had gained significant momentum and record labels were looking to exploit this trend. In 1977, the major record label Decca signed a deal with Cock Sparrer. The band released a number of songs through this deal including Runnin’ Riot which is a song they’re widely known for. The deal with Decca records ended in 1978 but by that time the band had produced enough songs to generate their first album. This album was released initially only released in Spain and later came to the UK in 1987 UK through Razor Records and was titled True Grit. The band disbanded for a while but was reunited in 1982. During this phase Cock Sparrer released their renowned song England Belongs to Me. The band’s debut album was released in 1983 and was called Shock Troops. This was followed by another album in 1984 called Running Riot in ’84. Another album was released in 1994 titled Guilty as Charged followed by the band’s fourth album titled Two Monkeys in 1997. After this period the band started reuniting occasionally for tours and concert performances. This includes some prominent performances at recent punk concerts and rock festivals, most notable of which are their performance at Rebellion Vienna and Rebellion Blackpool both in 2008 . The band also performed outside the UK at various international venues including the Punk and Disorderly Festival in Berlin in 2009 and at Riotfest in Chicago in 2009.
