Charo
In show business, only a few people are recognized by just one name, bring a smile to everyone's face and deserve to be called multi-talented.
A Spanish and American singer, dancer, comedian, actress and classical guitarist Charo is one of those few. She is known for her pompous stage presence and provocative outfits.
Charo was born in Murcia, Spain, and raised in Casablanca. She studied classical and flamenco guitar and claims Andres Segovia as her guitar teacher. For her excellent skills of playing uitar, Charo has been named "Best Flamenco Guitarist" in Guitar Player Magazine's readers' poll twice.
Charo was "discovered" by famous bandleader Xavier Cugat. Cugat became her husband on August 7, 1966. The two were the first to have their nuptials in Caesars Palace in Las Vegas. In the mid 1960s, Charo made her first US TV appearance on The Today Show.
Later the year 1968 saw her appearing on Laugh-In. In this show, Charo would appear on short chat-fests with Dan Rowan and Dick Martin. In 1971, she headlined Las Vegas shows, and reportedly was paid as much as Frank Sinatra, Ray Charles or Dean Martin.
The year 1977 saw Charo becoming a naturalized citizen of the United States. In the same year, she also filed for divorce from Cugat, and married to Kjell Rasten on August 11, 1978. Rasten soon became Charo"s manager, and the couple has one child, a son, Shel. Shel is now a drummer for the metal band Treazen.
Charo, throughout the 1970s, was a highly visible personality. She appeared 8 times on The Love Boat, as well as on variety and talk shows. Some of these talk shows were Donny & Marie, The Captain and Tennille, Tony Orlando and Dawn, The Mike Douglas Show, The John Davidson Show, and the list goes on.
By the late 1970s, Charo was being referred to as an example of how overexposure could damage a celebrity. This led Charo to imit her visibility during much of the late 1980s to late 1990s. She moved to Hawaii where she opened and performed at her own dinner theater.
At the turn of the century, she returned to show business. In the 2000s, she appeared in commercials for Sprint wireless phone service and GEICO insurance. She also made several guest appearances on Hollywood Squares. Most recently, Charo appeared on the Latin-themed VH1 reality show "Viva Hollywood" on May 11, 2008.
Charo appeared as the Celebrity Showtime entertainer on Royal Caribbean Explorer of the Seas on its January 4 & January 13, 2008 sailings. On May 23, 2008, she was called as a guest on GSN Live, while the following month saw her returning to the Dance music scene with the single "Espana Cani".
The song was issued on Universal Wave Records.
On June 29, 2008, she was invited on the Celebrity Grand Marshal of the San Francisco LGBT Pride Parade. There she was accompanying by hordes of Charo look-alikes on a pink float. Charo also made her appearance on the Adventure of the Seas on its August 10, 2008 sailing.
Charo has recently came up with her album called Charo and Guitar. It features a music that is a unique combination of New Age Flamenco Pop and some of the greatest Classical masterpieces ever written.
