Carnival of the Animals
Camille Saint Saens?s Carnival of the Animals is a set of orchestral character pieces. Each piece is meant to describe a particular animal by mimicking the sounds it makes or characterizing the way it moves or carries itself.

The piece is scored for two solo pianos and a small orchestra of flute, piccolo, clarinet, xylophone, glass harmonica and strings. The musical called Carnival of the Animals is a humorous, often featuring parodistic work.

Camille Saint-Saens only allowed the piece to be performed twice during his lifetime and once in a private performance requested by Franz Lisz. This humorous piece of work is in fourteen movements. It begins with the Introduction and Royal March of the Lion.

This piece is very regal and grand. It features a full, swaggering figure in the strings and fast, and runs scales in the pianos that convincingly mimic lion roars.

The second piece includes Hens and Cocks. It is a humorously nervous movement. With jittery string figures, the piece suggests scratching, clucking hens and staccato figures. These figures are then followed by trills in the pianos, producing a sound similar to those of crowing roosters.

The third piece is called as the ?Wild Asses?. This movement features the great running speed of these beasts. Their speed is evoked by the use of frantic, intense scalar passagework in the two pianos.

Tortoises are the fourth piece of the Carnival of the Animals. Making clever use of parody, Saint Saens suggests the slow-motion torpor of these creatures.

He adds the famous can-can melody from Jacques Offenbach?s Orpheus in the Underworld. Unlike the original tempo, the tune here is played painfully slowly by low-register strings.

The beat is surrounded by a throbbing triplet accompaniment in the pianos. Audience will then be shown the fifth piece named ?The Elephant?. It consists of a brisk, but lumbering and clumsy waltz melody played by the contrabasses.

Scored just for the two pianos is the musical?s next movement called Kangaroos. It consists of clipped, irregular phrases that suggest notably the hopping of startled roos. See the sixth piece, The Aquarium.

It is a tank full of peacefully swimming fish and the scene is developed by slow, languorous music. This music is further decorated by delicate filigree material in the glass harmonica, leaving placid and serene effect.

Personages with Long Ears is the eighth piece which suddenly the contemplative mood in unmistakable fashion. The next movement, the Cuckoo in the Forest is a quiet, cryptic passage in the pianos which is continually irrupted by a cuckooing clarinet.

The tenth piece is called ?The Aviary?. These are busy, yet relaxed melodic figures running through the pianos and flute over a rustling string accompaniment. You will then enjoy ?Pianists?, some of them are beastlike.

Experience an extremely parodistic movement of the Fossils. The Swan is the thirteenth piece; warm and expressive, evoking the gliding grace of a contemplative swimming swan. The fourteenth and final piece is termed as ?Finale?.

It is a merry closer, recapitulating snippets from many of the previous movements? Come and experience the ultimate fun of parody in the musical named Carnival of the Animal.
