Carlos Nunez was born in the year 1971 in Vigo. He is considered to be one of the best pipers in the world. When he was a child, he started playing flutes and later, at age eight, he began to play bagpipes. He started his career in the music industry at the age of thirteen. This was when he was discovered by the Chieftains. He is the grandson of writer and educationist, Albino Núñez Domínguez. Carlos was invited to play with the Lorient Symphony Orchestra when he was just twelve years old. In the year 1989, he recorded the soundtrack of the movie, Treasure Island along with the Irish group, the Chieftans.
He continued to work with the band and came to be known as the seventh Chieftan. Carlos Nunez is known as a specialist of Celtic music in the international scene. He is considered to be a scholar of the subject. His investigations are essentially two interrelated lines: the origin of Celtic music and its fusion with world music today. His interest in the subject has led him to travel the world and interact with musicians from different countries. He then translates their knowledge and experience in his works.
In the year 1996, he released his first album, A Irmandade das Estrelas which marked the boom of Celtic music in Spain. On this album, Nunez focuses mainly on the exploration of its Galicia native with Irish contributions. In his next album, I love free which was released in 1999, Carlos Nunez presents a reflection on the Celtic concept, exploring among others, the connections between traditional Galician music and flamenco. The texts that accompany the songs on this album are written by writer Manuel Rivas.
His next studio album was titled Soul of Finisterre. It was released in 2003 in Spain and in France as Un Galicien en Bretagne with a slightly different list of cuts. This album is the result of the long stay of the musician in Britain and France, where traditional music was recorded with renowned musicians. Carlos Nunez has also released a greatest hits album with several new cuts called Todos Os Mundos. In 2004, he released a CD plus DVD containing a concert recorded in Vigo with the title, Carlos Nunez & Friends. Carlos was also involved in the soundtrack of the film, The Sea Inside.
In May 2005, Carlos Nunez released Cinema do Mar in France. It was dedicated to a selection of very famous classical music pieces as the Bolero of Ravel and the Concierto de Aranjuez. In 2006, he worked on the soundtrack of the film called Tales from Earthsea. The following year Nuñez released the Spanish version of Cinema do Mar. In 2008, he worked on the soundtracks of two films namely Silk and Water Horse. Since 2007, Nunez has been digging into the world of Brazilian music. This research has resulted in his new album, titled "Alborada do Brasil."
