Cake, an American band, has managed to gain international recognition through their wide range of musical genres. The band focuses on genres including country music, hip-hop, folk music as well as Mariachi rock. The band was formed when John McCrea moved back to Sacramento from Los Angeles. McCrea searched for band members to play with, and stumbled upon Greg Brown (guitarist), Vince DiFiore (trumpet player), Frank French (drummer) and Shon MecFessel (Bass guitarist). McCrea convinced all of them, who were already playing along other bands, to join him. The group collaborated and formed Cake. In 1996, the Cake released their second album under Capricorn Records, “Fashion Nugget.” The album’s single “The Distance” became a major hit for the band and ranked at number five on RPM Alternative 30 as well as on Modern Rock Track. The album also gained critical praises for its sound and music. “Fashion Nugget,” reached gold status in 1996, and platinum in 1997.  The release of the second album followed some major international tours including destinations of Europe as well as Japan. The band’s third album “Prolonging the Magic” (1998) explored and experimented with different instruments and voice, but garnered similar positive reviews from critics and fans. The album was listed as the second best album of the year by The Columbian newspaper, and the hit single “Never there,” peaked at the Billboard’s Modern Track Chart. The album was certified platinum status bagging another milestone for the band.

 
The band’s fourth and fifth albums were released under Columbia Records. The fourth album “Comfort Eagle” (2001) got positive reviews from critics and was dubbed as “Cake’s at its best.” The songs were hailed as the band’s best work and the album went on to receive gold certification in US and Canada. The fifth album “Pressure Chief” (2004) also introduced several hit numbers including “No phone” and “Carbon Monoxide.” After two releases under Columbia Records, Cake went on to start their own recording label Upbeat Records. The band released a successful compilation album under their own record label in 2007.  After a period of six years, the band released their most recent album “Showroom of Compassion” (2011). The album was again well receive by audiences and peaked at number one position on Billboard Top Album chart, marking the first number one spot for any of the band’s album.

 
The band has gone through various changes in line-up over the years. However, the current band members include John McCrea, Xan McCurdy, Gabe Nelson, Vince DiFiore and Paulo Baldi. The notable former band members include Victor Damiani, Frank French, Pete McNeal, Greg Brown, Shon MecFessel and Todd Roper. The band is known for its lyrics filled with irony and sarcastic tone that is delivered with deadpan vocals.
