In 1972 the CMA Festival began as Fan Fair to give a unanimous platform to folk and country singers. Its first show was held in Nashville Municipal Auditorium which was attended by over five thousand people and lasted for twenty hours. From 1973 onwards the event is held during the summers in order to find better weather. In 1982 the event was moved to Tennessee State fairgrounds. Most of the significant changes in the festival were made in 2001 when it changed to a long weekend festival extending up to four days. The same year the venue changed to downtown Nashville where it was held at LP field, Gaylord Entertainment Center, Nashville Convention Center and Riverfront Park. The previous venue, the fairground, was changed to a make shift camp ground for the attendees.
CMA Festival has set new records for its huge attendance. Where the first year saw only five thousand people 2007 saw around 191,000 people coming to listen to their favorite music genre and favorite musicians. The festival boasts attendance not only from America but over forty countries including United Kingdom, France, Spain, Germany, Japan, Australia and China. There festival has no age bar and it reaches out to people from all age groups and backgrounds, making it one of the most important music events in the world. The festival never fails to disappoint its fans and hardly any country musician is not a part of it.
CMA Festival is more than a country music gathering. It has also gained a reputation of being a philanthropic organization running various projects for charity. For the last five years the proceedings from the festival have been going to the music school program. Named ‘Keep the Music Playing’, it started in 2001 when in the next four years a huge amount of $8000, 000 was also given to various other causes. The artists play for free and the earnings are given on their behalf. In 2006 however, the organization focused on music education in schools and the funding was channelized to improve music education in schools including setting up of music labs and purchase of music instruments.
Since its inception the festival has brought together some of the most iconic faces of country music. The artists who have performed at the festival include Dolly Patron, Portner Wagoner and Garth Brooks. The artists currently performing at the festival include Jason Aldean, Dierks Bentley, Trace Adkins, The Band Perry, Sara Evans, Reba, Martina Mcbride, Mirand Lambart, Sugarland, Josh Turner, Blake Shelton, Keith Urban and the recent sensation and last year’s Grammy winner Taylor Swift.
