Black Rock Desert is where this amazing and one-of-a-kind festival is held every year in Nevada. The name of the festival has been derived from the ritual of burning and effigy of a man made of wood. The festival starts on the Monday before the Labor Day holiday and ends on Labor Day holiday. The wooden man is burnt on the Saturday evening. The organizers of the event are Black Rock City, LLC and its history goes back to 1986 where this festival, now called as “Burning Man”, started off as just a bonfire practice. Larry Harvey with his few friends, met on the Baker Beach, located in San Francisco and burned an effigy of a man and a dog as an act of self-expression. In 1990, this event was moved to a place near Reno, Black Rock Desert. After getting a permit, this event started off as a regular thing and became popular by word of mouth. Initially, there were only participants in Burning Man and no acts or performances were scheduled or paid. It became the most liberal event where one could do anything with the exception of keeping weapons and interfering the others’ space.

The event took a turn in 1997 when certain bans were imposed on the festival which included a ban on dogs, ban on fireworks, a ban on burning other than on the specified platform and also a speed limit was fixed for the cars at 8 km/h. there are certain rules and principles of the Burning Man festival which includes Radical Inclusion, which states that anyone who has paid for tickets is welcome at the festival and is allowed to enjoy to the full, to abide by the rules and to provide for the basic needs themselves. It is encouraged that participants exchange gifts with one another instead of cash. Also, no cash is permitted to be exchanged between the attendees except for certain thing such as ice, beverages and transport fee.

Because of the remote location of the festival, it is one of the principles of the festival to bring all their necessary supplies with them with the exception of a few as no trades and commerce is allowed at the festival. Participants and attendees are encouraged to express themselves as and how they want and to help the fellow attendees and participants. The principles of the festival also state that the attendees and participants should be as civil as the law of the state requires. It is the motto of the festival to let the participants enjoy the festival to the fullest. The Burning Man festival works on the principle of “Leave No Trace”, a rule which requires participants to keep the area clean and to leave it as neat as it was before the festival.

Art is encouraged at the Burning Man festival where artists are provided proper space, opportunities and burning platform to quench the thirst of art. People mostly use mutant vehicles and bikes to travel through the Black Rock City and to create a spectacle of lights at night when all the cars and bikes drive through the city together to make Black Rock City as bright as Las Vegas.    

Black Rock City is a planned city where the festival is held. Center Camp is part of the Black Rock City where all the people meet and also has its own café and other institutions. There are theme camps and villages in the city which are groups of people having similar standings living in a collective place. A larger number of the activities of the festival is dependent on volunteers who work together to make the festival better. As compared to its image of being a liberal festival, Burning Man festival is a totally secure and safe event and has law enforcement agencies and petrol volunteers who work for maintaining peace and discipline at the festival.
