Brian initially started off by playing as a member of the 'Stray Cats', then known as 'the Tomcats'. After performing in New York and Philadelphia, Brian decided to play in London where he thought audiences would appreciate the unique rockability style the band had. Upon their arrival, Brian was approached by record producer, Dave Edmunds, who helped the 'Stray Cats' release a series of singles in England.
It was after their success abroad that the band was able to capture the attention of American audiences. The group's third album, 'Built for Speed' became an instant hit, as two of its songs (Rock this Town and Stray Cat Strut) made their way to the US Billboard Pop Singles, top ten.
As part of the 'Stray Cats', Brian, along with his band members, released a total of eleven albums in between 1981 and 2004. Out of these records, two albums (Built for Speed and Rant N' Rave with the Stray Cats) charted at number two and number forteen on the Billboard 200 while four albums, became charting hits in the UK.
After the 'Stray Cats' disbanded, Brian formed a seventeen member group named 'The Brian Setzer Orchestra' in the mid nineties. This ensemble played youth-oriented music with elements of jump blues and swing. 'The Brian Setzer Orchestra' released nine studio albums, seven compilation records and three live DVDs. Hits include 'Jump, Jive an' Wail' and covers of Beethoven's 'Fur Elise' and 'Symphony No. 5'. These songs were featured on the album Wolfgang's Big Night Out, which received a Grammy nomination for 'Best Classical Crossover Album'.
