Boston Pops was founded in 1885, four years after the establishment of the Boston Symphony Orchestra. It was created to fulfill the wish of Henry Lee Higginson, the creator of the BSO, of presenting the City of Boston with concerts that feature a lighter kind of music, along with providing summer employment for the members of the Boston Symphony. Thus, The Boston Pops Orchestra was formed as a subsection of the Boston Symphony Orchestra and presented this manner of music to the public, performing their opening concert in 1885. The performances had been initially known as the Promenade Concerts until 1900, when they officially earned the status of Pops, which is a short for popular concerts. These concerts merged light and soothing classical tunes with the recent hits of the musical plays, and a special novelty number. Their performances even today are astonishingly similar to their initial programs, and the Boston Pops Orchestra remains to be known as the Boston Symphony minus its principal players.

In 1930, Arthur Fielder became Boston Pops' first official conductor, beginning a fifty year permanent status. Before him, the Pops did not take up any personal maestro. With his expertise, Fielder helped the orchestra gain worldwide acclaim. His efforts resulted in bringing the classical music to the masses and removing the notion of classical music to be solely for the elite class, introducing a string of free concerts for the public. In company with his firmness that the Pops Orchestra would play popular music together with eminent classical pieces, Fiedler unlocked a latest niche in popular culture, ultimately encouraging the trend of classical music. As he was the top-selling classical maestro of all time, it was under his guidance when the Boston Pops prepared more commercially obtainable recordings than any other orchestra throughout the globe, with selling more than 50 million U.S. dollars of singles, albums, cassettes, and tapes. Over the years, The Pops' have released many hits, and one of these most famous works includes Fiedler's Sleigh Ride, a production of Leroy Anderson's composition. In addition, Fiedler is also credited and considered in Boston for having begun the yearly custom of the Fourth of July Pops concert and fireworks exhibit on the Esplanade, which is therefore, regarded as one of the most attended Independence Day celebrations in the entire country. It was also in Fiedler's time when the Pops and local public television station WGBH produced a run of weekly televised broadcasts, known as Evening at Pops, which were recorded during the Pops' regular season in Symphony Hall.

In 1979, when the legendary maestro - Fiedler died, the conductorship of the Boston Pops was occupied by John Williams, an Academy Award-winning composer, in the following year 1980. Continuing the Pops' tradition, which was originally, started by Fiedler, of bringing the classical music to a wider audience, Williams initiated the annual concerts at Boston College, called Pops-on-the-Heights, along with adding his personal significant collection of celebrated movie soundtracks, such as the Indiana Jones and Star Wars movies, to its range. Williams, after making several recordings with the orchestra, retired in 1993, when he was named the Laureate Conductor of the orchestra. Till date, Williams remains the Laureate Conductor of the Pops and conducts a week of Pops concerts most years. Among Williams' famous composed works for the concert hall include Essay for Strings, a symphony, and concertos for flute, violin, cello, bassoon, horn, and trumpet. Additionally, Williams has also composed theme music for several Olympic Games.

Since 1995 till date, Keith Lockhart has been the conductor of Boston Pops. His performances contain a flavor of lavishness and finesse for the dramatic. Lockhart also brought in various pop-music acts to play with the orchestra, such as Guster, Rockapella, Elvis Costello, and Aimee Mann.

Comprising a talented musicians and a brilliantly assembled set list, the Boston Symphony Pops is one of the most appreciated symphony orchestras on the market that continues to impress the audiences. After enjoying an initial local run of more than 4 decades, the orchestra burst into the national musical milieu during the Depression era and enjoyed widespread acclaim under conductor Arthur Fiedler.

Under Feidler, the orchestra brought its famously identifiable pieces to musical life, such as "Sleigh Ride" and "The Typewriter". This era also garnered the Boston Pops their first hit in "Jalousie", which went on to sell over a million copies and is also regarded as the first major orchestral record. John Williams' ongoing tenure with the orchestra has resulted in a scintillating musical legacy.
