The American jazz saxophonist Bill Pierce was born in 1948 in Virginia. He is famously known by his nickname Billy Pierce. He was born to educators, Frances and William, and was raised in Jacksonville as well as in Miami. A child prodigy, he started taking saxophone lessons when he was in the public school. He did his senior year at the University of Miami where he took oboe lessons. He then studied at the Tennessee State University for two years. In 1968, he was transferred to Berklee College of Music where he studied along with Andy McGhee who is a known tenor saxophonist and educator. Four years later, he graduated from the college.
Early seventies marked the beginning of his career. While he was a student, Bill used to perform with artists such as Stevie Wonder and Marvin Gaye. In the early eighties, he started to play with Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers. Arthur "Art" Blakey was a Grammy Award winning jazz drummer as well as band leader. He arranged a rehearsal band called 'Seventeen Messengers' that recorded with an octet named, 'The Jazz Messengers'. Bill joined the team as the musical director. He shared the bandstands with other talented young musicians such as Donald Harrison, Bobby Watson, Wynton and Branford Marsalis. The discography of Bill as a sideman includes his work with Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers on albums such as Live at Montreux and Northsea, Straight Ahead, Oh-By the Way and more.
Bill toured and recorded with Blakey for three years and then returned to Berklee. On his return, he joined the Woodwind Department as an Associate professor at the Berklee College of Music. He did not leave his career as a musician behind but kept performing with Freddie Hubbard on a regular basis in both New York and Boston. Bill joined the Tony Williams Quintet in 1985. The American jazz drummer, Tony was one of the pioneers of jazz fusion. Together, they toured in America, Europe as well as Asia and produced five recordings including Civilization, Native Heart, The Story of Neptune and more. He is still performing to packed houses throughout the region and you can see him live in different concerts in the upcoming days. Since 1986, Bill has been working for the Sunnyside label. All these years, he has been able to give equal time to recording, academia and performing under his own name for the label. He also became the chairman of the Woodwind Department in 1997.
Since 1999, Bill has been playing with Kevin Eubanks quartet. This talented musician has had the opportunity to work with legendary jazz artists such as Art Farmer, Billy Higgins, Max Roach, Hank Jones and more. Bill has presented a set of recordings of his own group as well. He has also performed at major European, American and Japanese jazz festivals. He is also an internationally renowned educator who has presented clinics in South America, Asia, Europe and all across the United States.
