Bill Gaither

Bill Gaither is a well-known singer-songwriter of the Contemporary Christian and southern gospel music who has written many popular Christian tracks with his wife Gloria. He also gained recognition for performing in the Gaither Vocal Band and the Bill Gaither Trio. In the nineties his career in southern gospel music along with that of other artists in the same line received a boost with the growing popularity of Gaither Homecoming which was the name given to a series of music recordings, concerts and videos that are produced, organized as well as often presented by Gaither himself. Some of his most hit tracks include He Touched Me, I’m Gonna Sing, It Is Finished, Something Beautiful, Sinner Saved by Grace, The King is Coming and BecauseHeLives. Bill Gaither created his first band in 1956 called the Bill Gaither Trio with his siblings Mary Ann and Danny during the time he was still studying at Anderson College. He graduated after three years and began working as an English teacher. In 1967, after trying to manage both his teaching job and a music career for several years, he finally quit teaching and instead began to fully concentrate on Christian music. His breakthrough song He Touched Me was recorded in 1964, only three years before he decided to focus completely on music. He is said to have been influenced by recognized southern gospel musicians such as Hovie Lister and Jake Hess, as well as by band like the Happy Goodmans, the Speers and the Statemen.

Bill Gaither has been performing constantly since the early fifties when he started singing in the Bill Gaither Trio. The group initially comprised of his brother and sister, and by 1964, Gaither’s wife Gloria replaced Mary Ann. The three performed many traditional gospel tunes alongside several original compositions created by the Gaithers, which added to the group’s winning contemporary vibe. Gaither is known for his low baritone or rather his predominantly bass voice and has often sung while playing the guitar or piano with the Gaither Trio.

Bill Gaither is often looked as the father figure of younger musicians from the Contemporary Christian music genre while he has also been helpful in prolonging the careers of those artists who were performing since before him. Many of the musicians who gained assistance from Gaither in getting a kick-start on their career or became known by performing with him include Cynthia Clawson, Karla Worley, Jonathan Pierce, Michael English, Amy Grant, Don Francisco, Steve Green, Carman, Sandi Patty, Michael W. Smith and Mark Lowry.

Bill Gaither has won numerous awards and honors including six GrammyAwards in the categories of Best Inspirational Performance twice for the songs We Want to Thank You, Jesus, and Let’s Praise the Lord both of which were performed by Bill Gaither Trio; Best Southern Gospel Album for the studio offering titled Homecoming by Gaither Vocal Band; Best Southern, Bluegrass or Country GospelAlbum thrice for their albums Kennedy Center Homecoming, A Billy Graham Music Homecoming and Lovin’ Life by the Gaither Vocal Band. He has been winning the GMADoveAwards since 1969, mostly in the category of Southern Gospel Album of Year and Southern Gospel Song of Year. In 1983, he was inducted into the Hall of Fame of Gospel Music Association. In 1974 and 1980, he won two awards from the ASCAP for Best Gospel Song of the Year. In addition, he also won the ASCAP title of Songwriter of the Century along with partner Gloria in 2000.
