Ben Howard's popularity is on the rise ever since the singer, songwriter hit the international music scene. He has two acclaimed albums to his name, recent one hitting the shelves in 2014. The artist has announced several live performances in its support and has even put Ben Howard tickets for sale. Following his debut in 2008, Howard has toured relentlessly for the past few years and his concerts have always recorded jam-packed crowd.
Ben Howard developed an interest in music after his mother introduced him to the phenomenal melodies of Donovan, Joni Mitchell and Richie Havens. He also had a keen interest in surfing and caught his first wave when he was only 11. All the while Ben Howard was also writing lyrics of his songs. He went on to pursue a degree in Journalism but dropped out only six months before his graduation. He started working for a surfing magazine and it was during this time that his songwriting caught the attention of his colleagues. Impressed by his talent, they convinced him to ditch newsroom and embark on a career as a professional songwriter.
It was all the encouragement he needed and soon Howard was performing in front of packed crowd. He continued to develop his style and also polished his skills as a guitarist. He learned to rap his knuckles on the guitar in between strumming, adding percussive element to his playing. Australian musician, Xavier Rudd invited him on his European tour, which gave Ben Howard more exposure and increased his fan following. Gaining confidence, he was able to come up with an EP titled “These Waters” and after getting a nod from the critics, released his second called, “Old Pine”. He earned himself a deal with Island Records and with them, released his first studio album “Every Kingdom” in 2011.
Ben Howard won the “breakthrough artist” honor at the 2013 Brit Awards and was also nominated for Mercury Prize. “Every Kingdom” peaked at number four on the UK charts and showcased a broad range of lyrical influences and musical styles. The album highlights Howard's ingenious grasp on rhythm, lively guitar lines and diverse vocals. It includes popular tracks like Old Pine, The Wolves, The Fear and Only Love.
His second album came out in 2014, titled “I Forget Where We Were”. It made it to the top on the UK charts and has mostly received positive reviews from the critics. Produced by the drummer Chris Bond, the album has been called “much grander” than his previous efforts and slowly grows on the listener rather than creating an immediate impact. Q Magazine has praised it in words, “Musically adventurous, sonically daring and really rather stunning”. Critically acclaimed singles from the album include, In Dreams, End of the Affair and Rivers in Your Mouth.
Ben Howard is currently on tour in support of the album and has already recorded performances that have been hailed as “impressive” and “hypnotic”. In his live shows he is supported by a four-member band and treats the audience to a spectacular light display that creates a breathtaking ambiance. Howard switches back and forth between acoustic and electric, making his intricate guitar strumming appear effortless. His rhythmic arrangements move from one song to the other, changing pace from quiet, slow sounds, into energetic beats that force the audience to bounce along.
