Unlike many other European nations and cities, Serbia and its capital city Belgrade were late to form a good orchestra. It was in 1923, when the Belgrade Philharmonic Orchestra was established by Steven Hristic. Not only was Hristic one of the most well-known Serbian conductors and composers of his time, he was also the orchestra's first chief conductor and director. Under the baton of the maestro Stevan Hristic, Belgrade Philharmonic Orchestra performed its first concert on April 28, 1923.
As the interest in music steadily increased, the Belgrade Philharmonic Orchestra quickly became popular. The orchestra and its program reached its peak during the 1960s. At the time, the orchestra was led by the world renowned conductor, ?ivojin Zdravkovic. During his time, several international experts ranked the Belgrade Philharmonic as the fifth best orchestra in Europe.
However, the orchestra did falter during the 1990s as many international musicians refused to visit Serbia due to the civil war in Yugoslavia. It was during 2000 that the orchestra was revived. The orchestra then went on a tour to several countries including Italy, Sweden, Austria and Slovenia. Many young musicians who studied in specialized musician centers outside Serbia during the civil wars came back and built a new image for the orchestra. So hurry up and grab Belgrade Philharmonic Orchestra tickets as soon as possible.
Since 2010, the important role of chief conductor for the orchestra has been kept by the world famous Chinese conductor, Muhai Tang, while the position for resident conductor is taken up by the young and talented Serbian conductor, Vladmir Kulenovic. During the last couple of years, the Belgrade Philharmonic Orchestra has conducted several international tours including several guest performances in countries including Austria, Italy, France, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Sweden. There have been many memorable moments for the Serbian orchestra which include their international stage appearances at the Ravello Festival of 2010, a total of thirteen concert tours in Italy during 2011 and the first live post-war guest performance at the Julian Rachlin & Friends Festival opening in Dubrovnik.
