Beach House is one of the newer pop bands that have emerged to the surface of music industry in recent post punk era. It was formed in 2004 at Baltimore, state of Maryland, and consisted since its foundation of two members, namely Alex Scally and Victoria Legrand. The band received appreciation from music critics as well as general audience right from its debut album, and has been giving good music to its listeners in genres of Dream Pop, Lo-fi, Baroque Pop, Shoegaze and Indie rock.

The founder member Victoria Legrand had family background that made her familiar with the showbiz and music industry in quite an early life. She is French by birth, and is the niece of singer Christiane Legrand, and her uncle was the film composer Michel Legrand. Victoria teamed up with Alex Scally in 2004 and formed this band named Beach House, where she was on vocals as well as played organ, while Alex played the guitar and keyboard.

The group had some fame coming its way in 2006, when ‘Pitchfork Media’ included its song Apple Orchard in its mp3 mixtape. Later that year, the band released its self titled first album by Carpark Records, which received good response by the audience and was included in Pitchfork’s Best Albums of 2006.

About 2 years later, the band released its second album named Devotion, which was also included in Pitchfork’s Best Albums of 2008. Towards the second half of that year, the band released another hit song, Used to Be. Next year, Beach House joined forces with another indie rock band Grizzly Bear, and provided vocals for the hit song Two Weeks, and later for the official soundtrack Slow Life for the movie Twilight: New Moon. The movie, as well as the song turned out to be a box office hit, and further raised the band’s stature in terms of popularity.

In the upcoming years, Beach House worked on some more of their singles as well as albums, and released their third album Teen Dream in July 2010. The album again received much appreciation by the audience, and also included a remix of one of their older songs Used to Be. Popularity graph for the band went higher, that manifested in their concerts becoming more and more crowded and ticket sales increasing. Many celebrities also gave their guest appearances in shows by Beach House. These included Beyonce and Jay-Z. In the year 2010, the band also released its single Norway as a free download on its website that was also featured on iTunes Free Single of the Week on January 12. By the end of year 2010, the band has become well known and its popularity has become undoubted.

Critics generally comment that the success of Beach House owes a great deal to the voice of its lead vocalist, Victoria Legrand and the similarity it has with that of an artist and renowned singer from the past century, ‘Nico’. Sometimes, her vocals seem to resemble that of ‘Kendra Smith’, a singer from 80’s rock scene. Victoria’s voice, coupled with the slow and dreamy rhythm of band’s music gives the whole song a feel that has some mysterious attraction about it. This effect is further exhilarated by the choice of lyrics that have a certain haunting feel in them. These are some of the factors that have contributed in Beach House being called a Dream Pop Band. Other influences the group is said to have include, Brian Wilson, The Zombies, Grizzly Bear, Chris Bell, Big Star and Neil Young.

In recent years, the band had some successful tours across the country and abroad, and increased its fan base a lot, owing to its unique singing style and experimentation with music.
