Arthena Franklin was born in 1942 in Memphis and but grew up in Detroit. She was the lovely daughter of Rev. C.L. Franklin who served as pastor at the New Bethel Baptist Church. Her background was of a religious magnitude and her father was a very well known figure amongst the community at large. Her father was also a very influential man with links to the great Martin Luther King. Her singing began from the church and she became a weekly singer in the gospel sessions ensuring a soothing experience for the people who came only to enjoy the voice of a young girl later on to be proclaimed as one of the best singers of all times. She was also heavily influenced by her aunt, Clara Ward, who was also a renowned singer of sacred music during that particular time. Her aunt became her mentor and was able to guide her on her path to music and fame stardom. She was only 14 when she recorded her first album.
During her early years of music, Aretha was also greatly influenced by blues music of Billie Holiday as well as jazz lyrics of Sarah Vaughn. Her personal favorite in gospel has always been Mahalia Jackson). All these great musicians of that time gave Aretha the ignition and dreams to capture throughout her later life.
In 1960, Aretha signed with Columbia Records and enjoyed a long and tedious journey of 6 consecutive years with the record company. During her sojourn, she recorded ten records that could not convince the music lovers and the music industry of her success and vocal power. It was a hit and run activity for Aretha working closely with great musicians and producers to search for her identity. Different music formats and styles were tried yet none could provide and conclude a true differentiator in the market for this young singer. In actuality, it was the other way around. The Columbia Records was a white soul production house that could not focus and concentrate on the originality of the singer and kept her off her true path of blues and black heritage music. Pop music and hip hop was not the elevation that Aretha had in mind. Those six years did allow Aretha time and experience to search within her own soul and focus on the powers of her spirit. Irrespective of the fact that no records could claim success, she left the record company fully saturated with scenarios and experiences that honed her skills and identified her true originality.
Though Columbia Records did not make her a success, her amazing voice did capture the attention of other sound record companies. Record companies were all lined up to offer her an entrance into their world immediately after she left Columbia Records. Jerry Wexler was waiting in the wings to sign Franklin when her contract with Columbia expired and that is exactly what he was able to do. In 1966, Aretha joined Atlantic records. Jerry Wexler had identified her talent and the record company successfully gave her the platform that she direly needed. 1967 to 1972 were the golden years for both Arentha Franklin and the music company. Her very first single from the record company titled ?I Never Loved a Man (the Way I Loved You)? became a smoldering success and unleashed the full force of Franklin?s mezzo-soprano. The song became an immediate hit and started the movement of Aretha Franklin pathway to success. This song was also the title of her first album.
Other great songs like ?Respect?, ?Do Right Woman ? Do Right Man? all attributed to the overall success of her first album. And even today her first album stands out as one of the most bizarre and sophisticated soul album of all times. She was able to introduce the spirit of her essence in the entire audience and capturing the music world by her tunes and her vocal commitment to soul searching and an experience that music lovers were going crazy about.
Sequential successful records soon followed that kept on growing the overall ratings of the gospel singer.
