The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame was founded in 1983. The museum where the most legendary musicians and bands are celebrated is situated in Cleveland, Ohio. For over three decades, the Hall of Fame has been known for honoring the most influential bands, producers, musicians and other personalities who have influenced the rock 'n' roll industry in a positive manner. The Hall of Fame initially presented a total of four categories into which the inductees were added. These were non-performers, performers, lifetime achievements and early influences. In the year 2000, Annual Rock and Roll Hall of Fame ceremony, added a new category named "Sidemen" while, "Early Influences" was removed.
For an artist/band/producer to be eligible for qualification, the individual/group must have been performing or active in the industry for minimum 25 years. Furthermore the inductee should be nominated by a majority of individuals who are a part of the committee, after which ballots are sent to over six hundred rock experts, who then vote whether the individual or group should be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Each year six to as much as twelve performers are provided with this honor and this is celebrated in an annual ceremony that is held in New York. If in a year, the ceremony isn't held, then the celebration for that year is held at the Hall of Fame City located in Cleveland, after three years.
The first batch of performers to be inducted into the "performers" category was Chuck Berry, James Brown, Ray Charles, Sam Cooke, Fats Domino, the Everly Brothers, Buddy Holly, Jerry Lee Lewis, Little Richard and Elvis Presley. The 2013 Annual Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony honored performers namely Heart, Albert King, Randy Newman, Public Enemy, Rush and Donna Summer. Over a time period of three decades, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame has presented multiple inductions of the same artists. 19 performers have been awarded with this honor with Eric Clapton being the only inductee to have been honored thrice; first as a member of "the Yardbirds" in 1992, then as a member of "the Cream" in 1993 and finally as soloist in 2000. Artists who have been inducted twice include Jeff Beck, David Crosby, Johnny Carter, George Harrison, Michael Jackson, John Lennon, Paul McCartney, Graham Nash, Rod Stewart, Neil Young, Ronnie Wood and Stephen Stills. This year English songwriter and singer, Peter Gabriel will receive his second induction, this time as a soloist. Previously Gabriel was inducted as part of the group, Genesis.
