Famous hip hop choreographer Shane Sparks judged the show for the first four seasons. The program is written by Erik Weiner and Jordan Allen-Dutton, and directed by Michael Simon.

The overall format of the show is that dance groups from across the US take part in it and display their dancing talent, winner of the show takes home a grand prize of US$ 100,000. Every week the participating groups are given different themes by the judges which the crews have to incorporate in their dance routines for example once the crews were asked to incorporate school gym in their dances and for this purpose teams used props like skipping ropes, lockers and even bleachers. Performance results are announced on weekly basis at the end of the show and Mario Lopez has to announce the two teams that have scored the lowest marks as they are put in the bottom two. The bottom two teams have then to perform one dance routine each which they had planned to perform for the regular round, the team that dances better stays in the show whereas the other one is eliminated. One of the show’s unique aspects is that all participating crews have their logo printed banners that are hanging in the stadium, as soon as a team is eliminated its banner falls down from the stadium top. Whenever one crew is eliminated it is supposed to perform one last dance act on the famous song Walk it Out.

Since the start of America’s Best Dance Crew, the winner team apart from the prize money is also awarded with a beautiful Golden B-Boy trophy which shows a B-Boy doing a freeze move.
