Aimee Mann was born in Midlothian, Virginia on September 8, 1960. She is graduated from Midlothian High School and attended the Berklee College of Music in Boston.

She co-founded a band with boyfriend Michael Hausman in 1983 titled 'Til Tuesday. With a feel of "sweetness and melody", the band attempted to capture the true spirit of Aimee Mann.
It achieved success in 1985 with its first album, Voices Carry. The title song became an instant hit and won MTV Video Music Award for Best New Artist.
Meanwhile Mann performed with the rock band Rush on the song "Time Stand Still" released in 1987. She also played an increasingly important role in songwriting for 'Til Tuesday and released two more albums, ‘Welcome Home’ and ‘Everything's Different Now’. The band broke up in 1990 and Mann left to start her solo career.
Mann released her first solo album titled ‘Whatever’ in 1993. Although the album had modest sales because of less promotion, however, it was critically acclaimed and paved the way for her next release I'm with Stupid. This next album was released in 1995 through Geffen Records but didn’t garnered fruitful results.
Aimee Mann got her big break in 1999 when contributed eight songs to the soundtrack of Anderson's movie Magnolia. This also includes Academy Award and Grammy-nominated song, "Save Me."
Anderson, who also happened to be Mann’s close friend, deliberately worked from Mann's lyrics to create the film's characters and situations. Mann gained greater public recognition after this movie and soon became sought after name as a soundtrack contributor.
Mann founded a recording label SuperEgo Records in the same year and released Bachelor No. 2 in 2000. The album became successful and earned her fame as a rock singer as well.
In the meanwhile, Penn and Mann formed a concept called Acoustic Vaudeville that intermix music and stand-up comedy. They took it to California and eventually onto some other ongoing national tour.
Mann’s solo career continues to rock with Lost in Space (2002), Lost in Space Special Edition (2003) and Live at St. Ann's Warehouse (2004). Her next album, The Forgotten Arm was a concept album set in the 1970s about two lovers who meet at the Virginia state fair and go on the run.
Released on May 3, 2005, it won her a Grammy Award for "Best Recording Package" in 2006. She also released an EP for Christmas in 2005 for sale through her website. Anotjer Christmas album was released in 2006 with poplar X-Max track "Calling On Mary".
Mann has contributed two songs for the motion picture Arctic Tale in 2007 and released another album in 2008. The last one earned her the highest Billboard ranking of her career so far.
