A Tribe Called Quest
A Tribe Called Quest is quite a phenomenal name of one of the famous American hip-hop group, which was formed in the year of 1988. The group is comprised of members like rapper/producer Q-Tip, nickname of Kamal Fareed, rapper Phife Dawg (Malik Taylor), and the DJ and producer Ali Muhammad.
Their fourth member Jarobi White, had left the group after the first album, but later joined them in the year of 2006. The group was considered to be a central part of Native Tongues Posse in accordance with De La Soul.
The group had gained a lot of commercial success out of all the groups to emerge from that collective. They had their unique way of making fusion of hip hop and jazz, which had really created a history in the hip hop scene, and it had really helped in the spread of hip hop culture.
They have such great songs to their credit, which are considered to be classics, including Bonita Applebum, Can I Kick It?, I Left My Wallet in El Segundo, Scenario and Electric Relaxation etc.
The group has released about six albums in the period of ten years. They had got a great level of critical acclaim for their first three albums.
The group had seen a split in the year of 1998, but reunited in the year in 2006. After the reunion, the group has toured the whole of United States and planned to release an album after some works in the studio.
The group is still considered to be the pioneer of alternative hip hop music, and it has helped to make it easy for the other hip hop artists to be acknowledged in society. Allmusic has given them the title of the most intelligent, artistic rap group during the 1990s.
The group had received a Special Achievement Award at the Billboard R&B Hip-Hop Awards in Atlanta, in the year of 2005. Later, the group was formally honored at the 4th VH1 Hip Hop Honors, in the year of 2007.
If we look at the history of the formation of A Tribute called Quest, it comes to our knowledge that Q-Tip and Phife were childhood friends and they had grown up together in St. Albans. Both of them had got a chance to meet Muhammad in Murray Bergtraum High School.
At that time, Q-Tip had been performing as a solo artist, where at times, he used to team up with Muhammad as a rapper/DJ duo. Q-Tip's had been really appreciated by audience and critics for his very distinctive vocal style and creative rhymes, the group had begun to generate a lot of interest amongst record label talent scouts.
They had got a chance to sign a demo deal with Geffen Records in the year of 1989, it was the time, when the group had produced a five song demo which included later album tracks including Description Of A Fool, I Left My Wallet in El Segundo and Can I Kick It Geffen had not offered a proper recording contract to the group, but instead the group was granted permission to shop for a deal elsewhere while retaining the Geffen financed songs.
The group had received lucrative offers for multi-album deals from a variety of labels both big and small, the group showed early savvy in opting for a modest deal offered by Jive Records.
